The schism in Russian Jewry between Communists (or more broadly, the revolutionary socialist/ Bundist-Bolshevik wing) and Zionists originated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and became irreconcilable by the time of the 1917 revolutions. It was fundamentally a clash over the “Jewish Question”–how to end antisemitism, poverty, and national oppression faced by the approximately 5-6 million Jews in the Russian Empire.
Main lines of division
Diagnosis of the Jewish problem Zionists (from the 1880s Hovevei Zion onward, and especially after Herzl’s First Zionist Congress in 1897) argued that antisemitism was ineradicable in gentile societies and that Jews were a nation without a territory.
The only permanent solution was auto-emancipation through settlement in Palestine (or sometimes another territory).
Socialists (Bundists, Bolsheviks, Mensheviks, Socialist Revolutionaries, Poalei Zion left wing, etc.) argued that antisemitism was a by-product of class society and tsarist backwardness. Once capitalism and the autocracy were overthrown in a socialist revolution, Jews would be emancipated as individuals and antisemitism would wither away.
Territory vs. “doikayt” (hereness) Zionists said Jews must leave the Diaspora (at least in masses) because exile was abnormal and dangerous.
“Negation of the Diaspora” (shlilat ha-golah) became a core doctrine. The Bund (founded 1897) and most Jewish socialists insisted on doikayt–Jews had the right to full cultural-national autonomy where they already lived (Yiddish schools, courts, local government in Yiddish, etc.).
Leaving for Palestine was desertion of the class struggle in the places Jews had lived for centuries.
Language and culture Zionists increasingly championed modern Hebrew as the national language and saw Yiddish as a pathetic “jargon” of exile. Bundists and most Diaspora socialists made Yiddish the centerpiece of a secular, proletarian Jewish culture. Bolshevik Jewish sections (Yevsektsiya after 1918) at first supported Yiddish institutions, then liquidated them in the late 1920s-1930s.
Attitude toward religion Both movements were largely secular, but Zionists (especially Labor Zionists) were willing to use religious symbols and cooperate with Orthodox Jews to build Palestine. The socialist anti-Zionists were usually fiercer anti-clericals.
Key moments that crystallized the schism1897: The same year the General Jewish Labour Bund was founded in Vilna, Theodor Herzl held the First Zionist Congress in Basel. The two organizations immediately denounced each other.
1903: Kishinev pogrom → Zionists said “This proves we must leave”; Bundists organized self-defense units and said “We fight here.”
1903-1906: Debate inside Poalei Zion (Marxist Zionists). The movement split: the Palestinian faction (Ber Borochov) argued socialism and Zionism could be synthesized; the “territorialist” and anti-Palestine faction eventually left, and the pro-Palestine faction was excluded from the Second International as “nationalist.”
1905 Revolution: Bund grew to ~33,000 members; Zionist Socialist Workers Party (SS) and non-socialist Zionists also grew, but mutual hostility was intense.
1917 February and October Revolutions: Most Zionist parties supported the Provisional Government or were neutral; the Bund and Poalei Zion-left joined the Soviets. After October, the Bolsheviks (with Jewish Communists in the Yevsektsiya) began systematic repression of Zionist activity:1918-1920: Hundreds of Zionist clubs and Hebrew schools closed.
1920 HeHalutz (pioneer training organization) banned.
1924-1928 Major show trials of Zionists; many sent to camps. 1928 Hebrew declared a “reactionary language” and completely banned from print.
Demographic reality–By 1917 the lines were roughly:Bund + Jewish Bolsheviks/Mensheviks/SR-left: strongest in Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine (the Bund polled 60-70 % of the Jewish vote in many northwestern cities in the 1917 Constituent Assembly election).
Zionists (including Labor Zionists): strongest in southern Ukraine (Odessa, Ekaterinoslav), Congress Poland, and Bessarabia. Overall the Zionist list received about 10-15 % of the Jewish vote empire-wide, but dominated Jewish community councils (kehillot) in many places.
By the mid-1920s the Soviet regime had physically crushed almost all Zionist organization inside the USSR (except the briefly tolerated Birobidzhan project, which most Zionists rejected).
The schism therefore moved abroad: Palestinian Yishuv and world Zionist movement on one side, Soviet Jewry (forcibly de-Zionized and largely Yiddish-speaking until Yiddish culture too was destroyed in 1948-1953) on the other.
In short, the split originated in two irreconcilable answers to the same question: Zionists: “Jews are a nation without a land → go to Palestine.”
Jewish Communists/Bundists: “Jews are a nationality inside the countries where they live → revolution here and now, with full cultural autonomy.”
The Bolshevik victory in Russia turned a fierce ideological debate into a life-and-death struggle in which only one side was allowed to exist.
