Frankenfood Nation: Why States Are Banning Lab-Grown Meat for Good Reason

If mutations go undetected, or if growth factors and hormones linger in the final product, consumers could be ingesting compounds with unknown metabolic or oncogenic consequences.

Seven States Say No
Thankfully, a growing number of American states are fighting back. Texas, Florida, Alabama, South Dakota, Mississippi, Nebraska, and Indiana have all banned the production or sale of lab-grown meat. The Texas bill, signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott, cites serious concerns about transparency, long-term health effects, and the survival of traditional agriculture.
State Senator Charles Perry, who championed the bill, warned that lab meat could devastate rural economies and family farms—while offering no proven benefit.
