Darwin’s Dangerous Idea: Why the Creation vs. Evolution Battle Shapes Everything We Believe
The debate between creation and evolution isn’t just about fossils, biology, or how old the earth is. Not even close. At its core, it’s about two totally different ways of seeing life, the universe, and God.
One view starts with the Bible’s claim that a personal Creator brought everything into existence out of nothing… creation ex nihilo. The other begins with the idea that life developed over millions of years through random natural processes, with no divine direction. Somehow, chaos and randomness creates its own order.
Evolution is usually packaged as “pure science,” but its acceptance is tied to very deep philosophical and religious commitments. The Bible says people naturally suppress the truth about God and replace Him with something else. For many, evolution became that “something else” … a framework for explaining everything without the need for a Creator.
The Intellectual World Before Darwin
Spinoza blurred the line between God and nature, making them one and the same… a philosophy called pantheism. Hegel suggested that God Himself evolves along with the universe. Feuerbach and Marx tossed God out completely, insisting that only the physical world exists. In France, scientific materialists declared that matter is eternal and miracles unnecessary.
Even inside the church, liberal theologians like Friedrich Schleiermacher were surrendering Genesis as real history, handing the question of origins over to scientists. By the time Darwin showed up, the cultural climate was already well primed for a theory that would explain life without God.
How Darwin’s Theory Took the Spotlight
Darwin’s thinking took shape during his voyage on the HMS Beagle. Reading Thomas Malthus’s ideas about population growth and resource limits, Darwin developed his theory of natural selection… the idea that small, helpful variations in living things get preserved over time, eventually shaping entirely new species.
To many, Darwin’s theory was the missing piece… a scientific-sounding explanation that made God unnecessary. Public figures like T. H. Huxley didn’t just promote Darwin for its science; they embraced it as a weapon against the “fence” of biblical authority.
The rush to adopt Darwinism was less about overwhelming evidence and more about the necessity of a worldview that left God out.
The Cracks in the Foundation
From the start, Darwin’s theory had scientific problems. The fossil record didn’t show the slow, steady changes his theory predicted. No one knew how traits were actually passed down… the study of genetics was still decades away.
Leading scientists of the day attempted to point out these theories and fabrications. But Darwinism stuck, not because the facts demanded it, but because it supported the growing cultural desire for a self-contained, God-free explanation of reality.
In that sense, it acted more like a starting belief… a presupposition… than a neutral scientific conclusion.
Evolution Marches Into Philosophy and Theology
Once Darwin gave evolution a scientific form, it didn’t just stay put in biology textbooks. Philosophers and theologians began reworking their entire systems to fit it.
Process philosophers like Alfred North Whitehead and Henri Bergson argued that God and the universe are bound together in an endless state of change. God, in their view, isn’t eternal and unchanging but develops along with history.
Catholic thinker Teilhard de Chardin mixed Christian terms with evolutionary progress, claiming that creation was headed toward an “omega point” of universal union in Christ… but his “Christ” was the universe itself, not the biblical Son of God.
Process theologians such as Charles Hartshorne and John Cobb went even further, presenting a God who is not sovereign over creation but caught up in it—shaped by it, dependent on it, and powerless to overrule it. This completely erases the biblical distinction between Creator and creation.
Why This Debate Isn’t Just for Scholars
Some modern Christians promote “theistic evolution,” the belief that God used evolution as a tool in the process of creation. This view does not necessarily require twisting or reinterpreting the Bible’s straightforward claims about creation, but it does encourage believers to engage in thoughtful reflection and interpretation. It invites believers to consider how scientific theories, including evolution, can be understood in light of the biblical narrative.
The Bible doesn’t treat creation as a side topic… it’s foundational. Creation ex nihilo shows us a God who is personal, powerful, and completely separate from His creation. It affirms that the universe had a beginning, that time itself is part of God’s creation, and that the world is ordered and purposeful.
It also grounds human dignity in being made in God’s image, sets the stage for moral responsibility, and gives history meaning. Evolutionary thinking, by contrast, reduces humans to advanced animals, makes ethics a matter of preference, and turns history into a random, directionless process.
The Heart of the Conflict Is Religious
This isn’t just a fight over how to interpret fossils. Not at all. It’s a clash between two competing faith commitments. One starts with God’s revelation in Scripture and in nature. The other approach, rooted in the concept of human autonomy, begins with the belief that humans are the ultimate authority and constructs a framework that excludes God entirely.
Romans 1 says that everyone knows God exists, but due to our fallen nature, we suppress that truth and create alternative explanations. This “fallen nature” refers to the human condition after the Fall, as described in the early chapters of Genesis. For many, evolution fills the role of an alternative explanation. It becomes the “light” or filter by which all facts are interpreted, functioning more like a religion than a scientific theory.
And like all belief systems, it shapes how people think about everything… morality, meaning, destiny.
Why Believing in the Creator Still Matters
If God isn’t the Creator, He has no real claim to be our Judge or Redeemer. But if He is… as the Bible insists… then we are accountable to Him for how we live and for whether we acknowledge Him.
The gospel message depends on God being both Creator and Savior. The same God who made the world, stepped into it in the person of Jesus Christ to redeem it. Rejecting Him as Creator almost always goes hand in hand with rejecting Him as Savior. That’s why defending the doctrine of creation matters… it’s a foundation stone for the whole Christian faith.
Creation tells us the world is good and purposeful, that human beings have dignity, that history matters, and that our lives have meaning under God’s authority. Evolutionary philosophies that erase or blend God into creation eventually undermine all of these truths. Gap theory, as advocated by Scofield, does similar damage.
The Choice Every Generation Must Make
At its root, the choice between creation and evolution is the choice between worshipping the Creator or worshipping something within creation.
Scripture calls elevating anything created… whether nature, humanity, or abstract processes… above the Creator “idolatry.”
Jeremiah 10:11 delivers it plainly: “The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth shall perish… They are vanity, a work of delusion.”
Believing in God’s creation isn’t just about getting the “origin story” right. It’s about having the proper foundation for understanding all of reality. When we start with God as Creator, we can think clearly, live purposefully, and look forward with hope to the day when the Creator and Redeemer makes all things new.
Why Worldviews End Up In a Massive Collision
Okay, so what’s the main takeaway?
Listen, a worldview can often be understood by looking at the most basic difference it makes between things. For Christianity, the most important distinction is this: God exists in a completely self-sufficient way, while all of creation depends on Him for existence. In other words, Christianity sees reality as having two distinct “layers” … God, and everything He created.
This simple idea is unique to Christianity. That’s why Christianity is in a league of its own. Other worldviews tend to see all existence as part of the same single “layer” of reality. Philosophers call that view “monism.” They often call Christianity “dualistic” because it separates God from creation, but the Bible insists that God’s being is in a category all by itself.
Some Christian denominations and traditions have not locked this down. For example, Thomas Aquinas, influenced by Aristotle, starts his theology by talking about “being” in general and only later distinguishes between God’s being and creation’s being. This approach causes serious problems.
Here’s why: In theology, it weakens the truth that God is the ultimate source of our existence and the one in complete control of the universe. If this starting point is wrong, every other doctrine built on it will be messed up. I repeat… every other doctrine is then infected.
In defending the faith (apologetics), for example, it means that this Aristotle-infused Christianity cannot fully challenge non-Christian worldviews at their foundations. Without believing that God’s existence is completely independent and entirely self-contained, you simply can’t present Him as the ultimate reference point for all truth and meaning.
And sadly, when God isn’t the final reference point… autonomous man, using autonomous reason, becomes the ultimate reference point in all predication. Look around, you’ll see it everywhere.
