The equal ultimacy of the Trinity is not merely a sociological insight… it is part of the gospel itself. The faith that “overcomes the world,” as the Apostle John says, is faith in Jesus Christ as the Son of God, fully divine and fully human, the second person of the Trinity.
Deny this, and you lose the foundation for liberty, justice, and even meaningful human relationships. The truth is, every heresy that has undermined the Trinity has eventually led to a distortion of social order… either exalting the collective over the individual or the individual over the collective.
The Present Crisis
Our own age is repeating the same old errors. In politics, movements on the left and right drift toward extremes… centralized control on one hand, radical individualism on the other. In churches, some exalt the institution over the believer, while others reduce the church to a loose network of self-directed individuals.
In economics, corporations either exploit their workers for profit or dissolve under the weight of unchecked personal agendas. Without the Trinitarian balance, all these systems decay.
Van Til would argue that these failures are inevitable in a culture that rejects the ontological Trinity. When God’s own character and nature become our model, unity and diversity are equally real, equally valuable, and equally necessary.
