A New Hope for Back Pain: Can a Cannabis Extract Offer Relief Without the Risks?

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Why This New Study Matters

Chronic low back pain is one of the most common health problems in the world. At any given time, more than half a billion people are struggling with it. The pain doesn’t just hurt—it affects sleep, limits what people can do, and often brings stress and depression.

It’s also the leading reason many miss work or stop doing things they love. Doctors define chronic back pain as lasting more than three months, and for many, it becomes a constant battle.

The usual treatments aren’t great. Some people use exercise, physical therapy, or over-the-counter pain relievers, but these often don’t work well enough. Prescription drugs come with big risks.

Problems With Other Pain Meds

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), like ibuprofen, can cause ulcers, stomach bleeding, and even heart problems if taken long-term. Opioids, like oxycodone or morphine, can help pain for a while, but they’re addictive. About one in five people on long-term opioids become addicted, and hundreds of thousands have died from opioid misuse.

Because of all this, doctors are desperate for safer and more effective options. One possibility is cannabis. Extracts from the plant have gotten attention in recent years as possible pain relievers. But until now, research has been small, short-term, and inconsistent, using different cannabis strains and methods. That makes it hard to know what really works.

This new study changed that. It’s one of the largest and most carefully designed trials ever done on a cannabis extract for pain. And the results suggest real hope for people with stubborn back pain.

How the Study Was Done

The trial took place in Germany and Austria, enrolling 820 adults with chronic low back pain that hadn’t improved with regular treatments. They were split into two groups: 394 got a cannabis extract called VER-01, while 426 got a placebo—basically a fake treatment that looked and tasted the same.

The study unfolded in stages:

  • Phase A (12 weeks): Patients were randomly assigned to VER-01 or placebo, and neither they nor their doctors knew which they were getting.
  • Phase B (6 months): Everyone who finished Phase A got VER-01.
  • Phase C (another 6 months): Some patients kept taking VER-01 longer.
  • Phase D (withdrawal): Patients who had responded well to VER-01 were either kept on it or switched back to placebo to see if their pain returned.

The main measure was how much pain dropped on a 0–10 scale. Researchers also looked at nerve-related symptoms, sleep quality, use of backup pain meds, mobility, and overall quality of life.

What’s Special About VER-01?

VER-01 is not just marijuana in a bottle. It’s a full-spectrum extract made under strict lab conditions so every batch is consistent. Each dose contains small, precise amounts of THC (the chemical in cannabis that creates a “high”), along with other compounds like cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabigerol (CBG). It also includes plant chemicals like terpenes and flavonoids, which may boost its effects.

The placebo was sesame oil with flavors and colors added so patients couldn’t tell the difference. Both were taken as oral drops using a syringe.

Who Could Join the Study?

Participants had to be at least 18 years old with back pain lasting three months or more. They needed a pain score of at least 4 out of 10 and had to have already tried other treatments without success. People with other major pain conditions, serious mental illness, a history of drug abuse, or recent cannabis use weren’t allowed in. This kept the focus on patients with truly stubborn back pain.

Did VER-01 Work?

Pain Relief

Yes. In Phase A, patients on VER-01 saw their pain drop an average of 1.9 points on the 0–10 scale, compared to 1.4 points on placebo. That 0.6-point difference may sound small, but it was statistically significant—meaning it was very unlikely to be random. For patients with nerve-related pain, the benefit was even bigger: about 1.5 points better than placebo.

Digging Deeper into the Results

  • 54% of people on VER-01 had their pain drop at least 30%, compared to 40% on placebo.
  • 32% cut their pain in half, compared to 23% on placebo.
  • VER-01 patients used about half as much backup pain medicine.
  • Sleep improved noticeably, and movement was easier.
  • Quality of life scores nearly doubled compared to placebo.

Long-Term Impact

The benefits held steady over 6 and even 12 months. People who stayed on VER-01 kept their pain relief, slept better, and functioned more easily in daily life.

But when those who improved were switched back to placebo, their pain quickly returned. That shows the relief was directly tied to the treatment, not just the idea of being in a study.

Safety and Side Effect Issues

Any new treatment has to prove it’s safe. VER-01 was well-monitored, and the results are reassuring.

About 83% of people on VER-01 had some side effects, compared to 67% on placebo. Most were mild and short-lived: dizziness, tiredness, nausea, dry mouth, or sleepiness. Serious side effects were very rare and happened at the same rate in both groups.

A few more people stopped taking VER-01 because of side effects (17%) compared to placebo (4%), but no life-threatening problems or deaths occurred. Importantly, no one showed signs of addiction, withdrawal, or needing higher and higher doses over time. Tests for abuse all came back negative.

How VER-01 Stands Out

The most striking thing about VER-01 is that it doesn’t just dull pain—it improves sleep, mobility, and quality of life. Standard pain drugs don’t usually do that. And unlike opioids, it doesn’t carry the same risks of addiction or overdose.

That’s especially important during today’s opioid crisis. Patients need treatments that bring real relief without trading one problem for another.

The Limits of the Study

No study is perfect. VER-01 wasn’t directly compared to opioids, though that research is planned. The study didn’t test whether patients could guess what treatment they were on, which can sometimes affect results. And it didn’t measure impacts on memory or thinking, which cannabis can sometimes influence.

In one part of the trial, the results didn’t quite reach the strictest definition of “statistical significance,” likely because there weren’t enough people in that group. Still, the overall data strongly support real benefit.

What It Means for People With Chronic Back Pain

For the millions struggling with chronic back pain, these results are encouraging. VER-01 reduced pain, boosted sleep, and improved function, all without addiction risk. The side effects were mostly mild and manageable.

This doesn’t mean VER-01 will work for everyone, but it could become a powerful new option—especially for people who can’t use NSAIDs or opioids safely.

Looking Ahead

The future looks promising. More studies are coming that will compare VER-01 directly to opioids and explore how it works for other pain conditions. If results keep trending this way, VER-01 could become a safer, long-term tool for doctors and patients in the fight against chronic pain.

For now, the message is clear: cannabis-based medicine, when carefully designed and tested, may finally offer hope for millions who’ve been living with pain for far too long.
