Building Community in Dark Times | Episode 504 Why Community Matters More Than Ever

The world feels heavy right now. Between political assassinations, economic chaos, and nonstop bad news, it’s easy to get dragged into the dark places—especially if you’re doomscrolling algorithms that push you toward the extremes. That’s exactly why community is more important now than ever.

Prepping has never just been about stockpiling beans and bullets. It’s about building a safety net of people who’ve got your back when things get rough. Friends, neighbors, fellow preppers—these are the people who can keep you grounded when the world tries to pull you apart.

The Danger of Isolation

When people get angry and don’t have a support system, bad things happen. Anger turns into hopelessness. Hopelessness can spiral into violence or despair. That’s why friends and community aren’t optional—they’re survival tools.

Instead of scrolling yourself deeper into outrage, pick up the phone and text someone. Check in. Plan a meetup. Go have a beer, grab some wings, or just sit around the fire pit and talk. If you’re hurting, chances are your friends are too. You need them, and they need you.

Finding Your People

I hear it all the time: “But James, I don’t know any preppers around me.” My response? Bull. They’re out there. Use the internet for something useful—search your town plus “prepper,” “homesteading,” or “survival.” There are groups, meetups, and communities waiting for you to plug in.

Homesteading groups on Facebook. Local prepper meetups. Survival events like the Self-Reliance Festival. If you look, you’ll find people who think the way you do—and they’ll be glad to know they’re not alone either.

Get Your Hands Dirty

Sometimes the best therapy is manual labor. Gardening, building, chopping wood—anything that gets you outside and working with your hands. Fall is the perfect time to start something simple: plant greens, clean up your yard, volunteer to help someone with their project.

And if you don’t have space for your own, join a workshop or a community project. Even if the idea of “paying to work” sounds crazy, those events are packed with like-minded people. You’ll come away with new friends, new skills, and maybe even some barter opportunities down the road.

Final Thoughts

Isolation is the enemy. Algorithms want to push you to the edge—but friends and community will pull you back to solid ground. Don’t wait until things get worse. Reach out now. Build your network. Strengthen your safety net.

Because when times get tough, it won’t just be your stockpile that saves you. It’ll be the people standing beside you.
