This False Divide Continues To Undermine Western Civilization
Many Christians have been taught that history is split into two eras: the old age of law and works before Christ, and the new age of faith and grace after Him. This idea goes back to the heretic Marcion and still shapes how people see salvation and Christian life in general.
But it’s a dangerous mistake. It suggests that in the Old Testament, folks earned salvation by their own efforts, in effect putting God in their debt. That can’t be true. Why? God owes nothing to His creation. As Jesus said in Luke 17:7–10, even perfect obedience doesn’t obligate God… we are simply doing our duty as creatures. Everything we receive from Him is grace, never payment.
Law and Grace Inside God’s Covenant
It’s also important to understand that God’s covenants aren’t business contracts between equals. They’re acts of mercy from a holy God to undeserving people. Even the laws associated with those covenants are gifts of grace meant to protect and guide.
Humanity broke those laws, falling into guilt and alienation. But Paul explains in Ephesians 2 that Jesus tore down the “wall of partition” and brought both Jews and Gentiles near to God through His blood. He didn’t erase God’s law… He fulfilled it to bring peace.
When the Law Feels Like an Enemy
To those under judgment, the law can feel like a death sentence, because it is. However, for those who have found forgiveness in Christ, the law becomes a guide to peace and righteousness.
Jesus, through His sacrifice, transformed the law from a barrier that condemned us… to a bridge that leads us to restoration. He satisfied the law’s demands, removing its power to condemn.
The Deeper Meaning of Peace
In scripture, peace means more than the end of conflict. The Hebrew word shalom carries ideas of wholeness, restoration, and repayment. Isaiah 26:3 says God keeps the steadfast in “perfect peace,” and Paul writes in Ephesians 2 that Christ is our peace… our restoration. In John 14:27, Jesus promises a peace “not as the world gives,” pointing to reconciliation with God, not just comfort.
Restitution at the Center of the Law
The fact is, the concept of restitution is at the very heart of biblical law. The old Covenant sacrifices were symbolic of the ultimate restitution that Jesus, the perfect sacrifice, would make for our sins. The law also required, for example, restitution among people, from returning stolen goods to the ultimate penalty of death for murder (Genesis 9). Justice, in the context of God’s law, is always about restoring what was broken.
Christ Removed the Indictment
Paul says in Colossians 2 that Jesus nailed “the handwriting of ordinances” to the cross. The law once stood as our accuser, but Christ bore our death sentence and triumphed over it. Through Him, the law’s condemnation is replaced with restoration, which, of course, is very good news!
Grace Fulfills the Law
Paul makes it clear in Romans: “Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid. Yea, we establish the law.” Grace doesn’t cancel God’s standards… it proves them by showing they were satisfied in Christ. Fighting God’s law is really fighting atonement itself, replacing real faith with empty sentiment and misplaced humanistic hopes.
The Roots of Civilization
Legal scholar Harold J. Berman showed that Western law and civilization were built on Christian ideas of atonement and final judgment.
When societies abandon these truths, justice crumbles and lawlessness rises. Look around, we’re there already. Psychological and anthropological theories replace restitution, but they can’t heal the alienation that only God’s law and grace can mend.
Humanism’s War on Christendom
Now, since the Enlightenment and especially the French Revolution, humanism has pushed aside God’s law and atonement. Man’s autonomous will replaced God’s justice, and chaos followed as you might expect. Where Christ was once the center, the replacing humanistic systems then spiral into disorder which include the random acts of violence we see today.
What the world really needs aren’t new political parties, fresh faces or a new world order… but a return to Christ’s rule of law and grace.
Courage, Morality, and Collapse
Alexander Solzhenitsyn warned in his 1978 Harvard address that modern life has lost courage. Leaders no longer apply moral standards to economics or politics. As a result, evil continues to grow.
Humanism denies personal sin, blames the environment, and makes material needs supreme. Marx called communism “naturalized humanism,” stripping away God’s law entirely. Without God’s justice, Solzhenitsyn warned… every humanistic system will collapse.
The Two Paths: Life or Death
Scripture offers only two ways: the way of life… God’s law fulfilled by grace… and the way of death… self-rule and lawlessness. Paul sums it up in Romans 6:23: “The wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Early church preaching always returned to this: theonomy or autonomy. Genuine sanctification means growing in obedience, not escaping it. Societies that despise God’s law always fall under its curse.
How Lawlessness Spread
Interestingly, before the French Revolution, moral corruption hid in closed, elitist circles. (Think Epstein Island)
The Revolution that followed turned it into a public “right.” Just as today, pre-revolutionary France’s education and the arts mocked Christianity. Romanticism and its modern printed media then spread depravity to the masses. What was once the sins of secret societies became popular entertainment for all. This cultural collapse shows what happens when societies reject God’s law and grace for lawless autonomy.
Coming Back to the Foundation
Separating law from grace has been a deadly mistake. God’s law and God’s grace have always worked together to bring peace for individuals, families, and cultures. This is “full gospel” restoration.
If the West wants justice, order, and hope again, it must return to Christ’s atonement and God’s law… the only foundation strong enough to rebuild a broken world. Only then can peace reign as grace and law stand united in God’s mercy.
