Abilene, Texas, doesn’t usually make headlines for cutting-edge technology. But just beyond its wide-open plains, construction crews are building something massive—a data center for OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. Inside, endless rows of servers will buzz with calculations, powering the next generation of artificial intelligence.

It’s an enormous gamble on infrastructure, one that’s already reshaping the marriage between computing and electricity. But it raises a question we can’t ignore: can America’s power grid keep up?

A New Kind of Energy Giant

This week, OpenAI announced a deal with chipmaker Nvidia to launch data centers that will use 10 gigawatts of electricity—equal to the entire summer demand of New York City. And that’s just the opening chapter.

Through a larger effort called Stargate, backed by Oracle, SoftBank, and federal programs dating back to the Trump administration, total demand could climb to 17 gigawatts. That’s as much power as Switzerland and Portugal put together.

Andrew Chien, a computer science professor at the University of Chicago, says the scale is staggering. “Now [computing] could be 10 or even 12 percent of the world’s power by 2030,” he warned. For context, the Texas grid runs at about 80 gigawatts. If OpenAI moves forward at full speed, its facilities could eat up nearly a fifth of that.

And OpenAI isn’t alone. Google, Meta, and others are also building AI mega-centers, some bigger than dozens of football fields. Their energy pull could soon eclipse the uproar once caused by Bitcoin mining, which drew as much electricity as a small nation.

Power Is the Strategy

For OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman, energy demand isn’t a side issue—it’s the foundation. “Compute infrastructure will be the basis for the economy of the future,” he said, insisting that breakthroughs in medicine, climate, and even cancer cures depend on scaling up.

That scaling requires not just electricity but massive amounts of water for cooling. Already, towns near large data centers are seeing stressed aquifers and disrupted ecosystems. Some residents wonder if their drinking water is safe.

Cornell professor Fengqi You warns of ripple effects: “If data centers pull all the local water or disrupt biodiversity, that creates ripple effects far beyond computing.”

The challenge isn’t just about feeding machines—it’s about protecting people and ecosystems.

The Clean Energy Squeeze

Nuclear power is Altman’s favored solution, and he’s invested in several nuclear startups. He argues it’s the only technology capable of meeting AI’s steady, round-the-clock demand.

But the numbers don’t line up. “The amount of nuclear power that could come online before 2030 is less than a gigawatt,” said Chien. “So when you hear figures like 17 gigawatts, the numbers simply don’t match.”

Instead, experts expect the shortfall will be met by natural gas, plus expansions of solar and wind, with older fossil fuel plants retrofitted along the way. But even together, these won’t cover the hunger of AI, especially during weather extremes when the grid is already stretched.

A Fragile Grid Under Pressure

All of this comes on top of an American grid that’s already cracking. Texas A&M’s Urban Resilience AI Lab recently used 179 million data points from Oak Ridge National Laboratory to map weak points in the system. The results were grim.

Outages have climbed by 20 percent since 2019. Texas, California, and Louisiana lead the nation in disruptions between 2000 and 2023. Hot spots were found along both coasts, the Gulf states, and the Great Lakes—areas where high population meets weather extremes.

“We knew vulnerability was worsening, but the magnitude shocked us,” said Dr. Ali Mostafavi, who leads the lab. “After 2019, we’re seeing a 20 percent annual increase in outage duration and frequency.”

For families, grid failure isn’t just inconvenient. Spoiled food from a fridge outage can cost $200. Longer blackouts rack up thousands in costs from relocation, damage, or medical crises for vulnerable residents.

The Climate Wild Card

Climate change is only amplifying these stresses. Hurricanes like Beryl and deep freezes like Winter Storm Uri show how fast severe weather can wreck reliability. With hotter summers, stronger storms, and more frequent cold snaps, outages are not only becoming more common—they’re lasting longer.

Now, the race to electrify AI adds another layer of competition. Energy once meant for homes, cars, and factories is now being diverted to sprawling data centers.

Households Fight Back

One growing solution is solar plus battery storage, sometimes called solar generators. Solar panels tied to backup batteries can shield families from blackouts and cut dependence on dirty diesel generators.

According to EnergySage, families can save around $10,000 on installations, with more relief from federal tax credits if they act before year’s end. The systems aren’t just cheaper over time—they’re also cleaner, quieter, and safer than gasoline-powered alternatives.

Communities are also pushing back. Some towns have introduced moratoriums or tough restrictions to keep data centers from draining water, raising utility costs, or altering local ecosystems.

Walking a Tightrope

America faces a moment of truth. AI could be as transformative as the industrial revolution, unlocking cures, discoveries, and breakthroughs across society. But the pace and scale of its growth threaten to overwhelm a grid that’s already fragile.

For lawmakers and regulators, the challenge is stark: how to balance AI’s colossal energy needs with the demands of climate resilience, community security, and a modernized grid.

As Professor Chien put it, “We’re coming to some seminal moments for how we think about AI and its impact on society.”

The question is whether we can find balance—before AI’s future outpaces the grid’s ability to support it.
