Halloween’s Blind Spot: The Blood That Belongs to God
Every October, as jack-o’-lanterns grin and sidewalks fill with dollar-store demons, people juggle symbols they barely grasp… blood, spirits, omens, spells… like kids playing catch with live grenades.
Long before plastic fangs, Scripture drew a bright line in the dirt: “You shall not eat anything with the blood, neither shall you use enchantments, nor observe times” (Leviticus 19:26).
On the surface, simple. Under the surface, surgical. One verse ropes three taboos together… drinking blood, fortune-telling, witchcraft… and nails the same disease: the itch to grab power, control outcomes, and pry secrets from heaven without trusting the God who owns them.
These are not random rules. They expose the universal hack in the human heart… man trying to hot-wire life instead of bowing to the One who gave it.
 The Sacred Meaning of Blood

From page one, the Bible ties blood to life like current to a live wire: “For the life of the flesh is in the blood” (Leviticus 17:11). Pagan nations treated that life like a vending machine. Archaeologists keep digging up liver-reading tablets and blood-reading rituals—priests sipping vitality, squinting at organs for headlines from the future.
So when God bans blood on the menu, it isn’t squeamishness—it’s loyalty. Drink the blood and you cross the line into fellowship with darkness. Only God owns life. To gulp it is to steal it. That’s why Leviticus 19:26 locks blood and divination together. Both are the same heist… grabbing life or knowledge that’s stamped “Property of God.”
Holiness isn’t superstition; it’s trust. Life and truth flow from communion with the Creator, not from back-alley shortcuts with spiritual crowbars.
The Anxiety to Know
The Hebrew nachash (“enchantments”) and onain (“observing times”) are early tech for fortune-telling… reading bird flight, star charts, storm clouds, anything to mute the fear of tomorrow. Today we’ve traded sheep livers for astrology apps and false “Christian” prophets, but the fuel hasn’t changed: fear wants a leash on the future.
Scripture doesn’t wink at that. It calls it idolatry. Ezekiel 13 shows false prophetesses selling charms “for handfuls of barley,” monetizing terror while trapping souls. God’s verdict? “You will no longer envision futility nor practice divination… I will deliver my people out of your hand.” Translation: fortune-telling and false prophecies feed on fear and fatten bondage. It never frees; it farms.
The Psychology of Fortune-Telling
Anthropologist Jan Yoors, in The Gypsies, noted Romani readers often didn’t believe the magic—they believed the market. One woman said fortune-telling attracts those “who cannot face life’s realities.” It doesn’t heal; it hooks. It breeds a “compulsive greed for prophecy.”
Same with horoscopes and tarot apps—comfort without conversion, reassurance without repentance. As R. J. Rushdoony said, occult fatalism is faith’s evil twin. God’s sovereignty makes men responsible; occult and “witchy” determinism makes them casualties. Victims. Repentance gets traded for self-pity, and the human soul always stalls out.
Witchcraft: The Poisoner’s Power Game
If fortune-telling is fear in a dress, witchcraft is pride with its sleeves rolled up. Hebrew kashaph means “poisoner.” That tells you the mission—manipulate, hex, dominate. History stacks the receipts: blood pacts, sacrifices, curses, all designed to bend reality to human will.
Historian Jeffrey Burton Russell—no sensationalist—found real cults invoking real darkness, and he warns: witchcraft revivals don’t end in liberty; they rot the rafters.
Where the fortune-teller surrenders to fate, the witch tries to rewrite it. Both reject faith. Both swap trust for control. Modern Wiccan leader Raymond Buckland admitted it baldly: “Behind the magic of witchcraft is the belief that power comes from the human body.” There’s the fist in God’s face—man as his own deity.
Existentialism and the Witchcraft Revival
That same creed runs through modern existentialism: no absolute truth, only whatever you weld together with your will. Live “authentically”—which usually means “untethered.” Witchcraft ritualizes that philosophy.
It’s atheism with candles… self on the throne, the world reduced to raw energy to be harnessed. And the end is always the same: burnout, fragmentation, the soul eating its own tail.
Chaos as a Creed
Ancient pagans even scheduled rebellion. Rome’s Saturnalia flipped the moral switch; today’s Mardi Gras reheats the recipe… vice as virtue, chaos as creation. Let’s call it the “chaos cult”: worship of disorder dressed up as freedom.
Watch our age… every boundary mocked, every category blurred, transgression as sacrament. Reject God’s order, and chaos becomes the new catechism.
The Law That Builds
Against that madness, Scripture doesn’t scold the desire to shape tomorrow… nope, it sanctifies it. “If a man does My judgments, he shall live in them” (Ezekiel 20:11). The future isn’t divined from entrails or bullied by spells; it’s formed by obedience, brick by brick.
Rushdoony called brick-by-brick obedience “capitalization”— a stacking moral and spiritual wealth: trust, discipline, craft, creativity. Lawless cultures chew and eat their own lifeblood; law-anchored ones plant orchards their grandchildren harvest.
Every great civilization rose on righteousness and fell on rebellion. Obedience builds; anarchy bleeds.
The Symbolism of Blood
The blood law sums it all. Drinking blood is devouring life that belongs to God. Fortune-telling and witchcraft are the same sin with different costumes—feeding on what isn’t ours. The fortune-teller eats fear; the witch gnaws at God’s throne. Either way, the people grow anemic.
Biblical sacrifice flips the script: the blood is poured out—returned to its Giver, which is why Christ’s blood silences every counterfeit. His life wasn’t seized; it was given. Rebellion replaced by redemption. Manipulation replaced by mercy.
Modern Masks of Paganism
Today’s “manifestation” rituals, energy readings, and slick “law of attraction” clips? Witchcraft with nice fonts. Even universities peddle a parallel gospel: man defines reality, truth has no edges. The packaging changes, the spirit doesn’t—self as god, truth as tool, chaos as freedom.
The truth is, when the obedience-to-God train stops, “decapitalization” happens big time. You get a society cannibalizing its morals and its mind.
The Redeemed Future
The Bible offers a better way to shape tomorrow… character over control. “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God” (James 1:5). Real foresight rides on righteousness. Honesty compounds into trust. Diligence matures into fruit. Obedience hardens into stability. The path ahead isn’t hidden in stars… it’s written in stone—and fulfilled in Christ.
“Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him, and He will act” (Psalm 37:5). Not wish-thinking—covenant reality. The God who authored life governs its future.
Life Over Power
Leviticus 19:26 endures because it exposes our oldest addiction: the itch to control what only God commands. False prophecy and fortune-telling’s fatalism, along with witchcraft’s pride, all end in a ditch. God’s law pulls the car back onto the road.
Faith re-sacralizes life. Obedience rebuilds order. Every time a people trades magic for morality, they stop drinking their own blood. They begin, finally, to live.
As Isaiah said, “This is the way—walk in it.” Life is in the blood, and the blood belongs to God. Knowledge belongs to God. The future belongs to God. Accept that, and fear loses its grip, pride loses its fangs, and freedom returns… rooted not in omens, but in covenant, law, and the living blood that gives life instead of stripping it bare.
