West Coast’s most dangerous faults could rupture together

BATTLEFORWORLD.COM | October 13, 2025: Scientists are now realizing that the West Coast’s two most dangerous fault lines might be more in sync than have been realized. A new study has revealed that the two sleeping giants to watch, are the Cascadia subduction zone and the northern San Andreas fault, and that both have been moving in rhythm for millennia, shaking within hours of each other in their geological tremors, rattling the coastline from Oregon to California.

A research team led by Oregon State University geologist Chris Goldfinger published findings on September 29 in the scientific journal Geosphere, showing the first evidence that the two faults have interacted repeatedly over thousands of years.

The Cascadia subduction zone runs from Northern California, through Oregon and Washington, up to southern British Columbia; while the famous San Andreas fault runs along the California coast straight through San Francisco.

The Cascadia subduction zone stretches from Northern California to British Columbia and is capable of producing magnitude 9 earthquakes like the one that struck in 1700. In April 2025 research was published by the National Academy of Sciences showing that a future Cascadia megathrust quake – where one tectonic plate slides under another, gets stuck against the subducting plate, and then abruptly slips – could instantly sink parts of the coastline the findings said by several feet and expand floodplains by more than 100 miles. 

The study does not predict when the next rupture will occur; however, the findings add new dimensions on how an evaluation of the West Coast could happen before or after the earthquake hazards. …
