How to Prep Around Dumb Laws (Part 2) | Episode 559

Good morning, it’s James from SurvivalPunk.com, and today we’re continuing the series on ridiculous restrictions, overregulation, and government “solutions” that make preparedness harder instead of easier.
Part 1 hit Berkeys, rainwater, kratom, and general self-reliance.
Part 2 is all about the banned, the restricted, the neutered, and the over-regulated gear every prepper deals with.

And yes — we’re covering gas cans, body armor, Chinese radios, and all the little “illegal-but-not-really-illegal” workarounds that every prepper should know.

Before we jump in, yes — I did an entire episode on shaving for the apocalypse, and yes — my wife caught me editing it and gave me that look. So a haircut episode may be coming in the future.

But for today, let’s talk about the gear that bureaucrats have ruined.

The Gas Can Problem (California Ruined It for Everyone)

If you’ve bought a gas can in the last decade, you know the struggle.
Modern gas cans are a safety puzzle designed by someone who has never poured gas into anything.

The “spill-proof” design causes spills.
The push-and-twist nozzle is a circus act.
>They lock. They jam. They dribble.

All thanks to California emissions rules that everyone else gets stuck with.

Here’s the truth:
Old gas cans weren’t perfect — but they worked.
Modern ones don’t.

So what do you do?

1. Get a NATO metal jerry can.
These things are tanks.
>They don’t leak.
>They don’t bulge.
>They don’t break.
You will, however, need the separate spout attachment.
(Or you can keep using a funnel like a barbarian — it works.)

2. Use a 10–15 gallon drum.
These blue chemical drums hold gas beautifully.
You’ll need:

  • a bung wrench

  • a siphon (don’t get caught with one during a traffic stop — cops can call it a “theft tool”)

3. Buy older cans at yard sales or surplus.
Not fashionable.
But functional.

Gas cans used to be simple — open, pour, done.
Now it’s the Hokey Pokey.

Preppers, as always, choose function over compliance.

Body Armor: Legal Here, Illegal There, Confusing Everywhere

Some states have banned or restricted civilian body armor.
Plates, helmets, soft armor — all lumped together.

Why?
They claim it’s to stop criminals, but the people following the law weren’t the problem.
And bad guys don’t care about purchasing restrictions anyway.

Your options:

1. Move.
If your state bans armor, it’s probably banning a lot of other freedoms too.

2. Buy from a friend out of state.
Some manufacturers won’t ship to restricted states, but a friend might be willing to accept the delivery and forward it.
(Yes, there’s some legal gray here — know your risks.)

3. Chinese armor (AliExpress, Temu, Wish).
Most of it… lies about its rating.
Some plates do surprisingly well, stopping AR rounds.
Others fail at stopping a .380.
If you go this route:

  • buy the highest rating they claim

  • assume it performs one level lower

4. Build your own armor.
A thick steel plate will stop bullets.
It will also:

  • weigh a ton

  • suck to wear

  • but absolutely work

Your life, your choice.

FCC Targeting Baofengs — The Prepper’s Favorite Tool

The FCC has been side-eyeing cheap Chinese radios for years.
Baofengs, in particular, break every rule the agency can think of:

  • too powerful

  • too flexible

  •  easy to misuse

  • too inexpensive

Which is exactly why preppers love them.

If you want Baofengs, now is the time to buy a few spares:

  • they’re cheap

  • they work

  • they’re programmable

  • they’re expendable

  • they’re perfect for SHTF

You don’t need a ham license to own a radio.
You only need one to transmit — and when the apocalypse hits?
Nobody’s checking your call sign.

If they ever ban imports, prices will skyrocket overnight.
Prep accordingly.

Why Overregulation Always Backfires

Every item we talked about today has one thing in common:
Bureaucracy made it worse.

Gas cans → less safe
Body armor → harder for good people to get
Radios → harder to communicate
Containers → more expensive
Tools → over-engineered garbage

Prepping is always about one thing:
solving problems the simplest possible way.

Government is always about the opposite.

That’s why the smart prepper learns the rules, then learns the workarounds.

Final Thoughts

Dumb laws aren’t going anywhere.
Overregulation isn’t going anywhere.

But preppers?
>We adapt.
>We find alternatives.
>We source older gear.
>We build our own solutions.
>We out-think the system.

This has been James from SurvivalPunk.com — DIY to survive, and stay tuned for Part 3 of prepping around dumb laws.

Some good tips but you don’t have to OBEY any unconstitutional laws put up by mentally ill or the commies RULING you. SHeesh……

They are NULL and VOID on the onset. Take for instance the many varied illegal taxes you PAY!
