There is nothing new under the sun. The god Israel kept running back to… Baal, the lord of rain and soil, the divine patron of every throne and tyrant… never actually died. He simply changed clothes.

Today he wears a suit and tie in Washington. He speaks in the language of legislation, executive orders, and regulatory agencies. He is worshiped in the language of polling numbers, market indices, and military might.

As Rousas John Rushdoony argued throughout his life’s work, Baalism is not an ancient curiosity… it is the default religion of fallen man, and it is thriving in 2026.

Baalism, at its root, is the belief that ultimate power and final authority reside somewhere within the created order… in a ruler, a nation, a natural force, or history itself. Van Til made this precise in his presuppositional apologetics: every non-Christian worldview, without exception, begins with the assumption that man or nature is the ultimate reference point for truth, law, and meaning.

That is Baalism with a Ph.D. Whether it presents itself as pragmatism, progressivism, technocracy, or soft socialism, its confession is always the same… there is no God above the system, so the system is god.

Mao, Marx, and the Modern Molech

When Mao Tse-tung declared that political power grows from the barrel of a gun, he was not being original.

He was simply repeating the oldest creed in human history: might makes right, and history is the judge of all things. This is what Rushdoony called the “moral force of the triumphant and ruling force.” Whoever wins, wins… and their victory becomes, by definition, their justification.

This logic drives the modern administrative state. Washington does not merely govern; it defines. It tells you what a woman is. It decides what speech is permissible.

It determines what medicine you may use, what food your children eat at school, how your land may be used, and increasingly, what ideas constitute a threat to “democracy.” The name has changed — from Baal to the Bureau, from Molech to the Ministry — but the demand is identical: bow, or be consumed. The children sacrificed to Molech were literal.

The children sacrificed to modern Baalism include every young mind fed into a state education system designed, as Rushdoony documented in The Messianic Character of American Education, to produce compliant servants of the state rather than men and women under God.

Van Til’s Challenge to Every Assumed Autonomy

Cornelius Van Til’s great contribution was to expose the pretense of neutrality. No one reasons from nowhere. Every judge, politician, scientist, or journalist operates from a set of foundational commitments… and those commitments are either submitted to God or declared independent of Him.

That second option is what Van Til called autonomy — self-law — and it is the epistemological root of every Baalish system that has ever existed.

This is why the prophets did not merely debate Baal’s priests… they confronted them. Elijah did not call for a commission to study the drought or a symposium on competing rainfall theories.

He announced, plainly and publicly, that God controls the rain… and that Israel’s faithlessness had cost them every drop of it. The drought was not a weather event. It was a word… a direct, public statement from the God of Scripture that Baal, the rain god, the god of fertility and natural process, was a fraud. Every day without rain was a sermon.

The State as Baal in 2026

Look honestly at the political landscape of the present moment. The federal government of the United States currently holds debt exceeding $36 trillion. Cities across the country report infrastructure in decay, border security in disarray, and a generation of young men who have never known stable fatherhood, meaningful work, or transcendent purpose.

And yet, the instinct of the culture — and of many Christians — is still to look to “Big Government” for solutions. We still fear the power of the state more than we fear God. We still measure our security by interest rates and election outcomes rather than by faithfulness and covenant.

That is Baal-worship. And Rushdoony said so plainly: “We look more fearfully to the power of Washington, Moscow, and Beijing than to the power of the Lord. When we do so, we are Baal-worshippers.”

The existentialist says truth is whatever autonomous man wills it to be. The pragmatist says truth is whatever produces results. Both are simply dressing up the ancient Canaanite altar in modern academic language. Neither can account for the Psalm 75 reality… that promotion comes neither from the east nor from the west, but from God, who puts down one and raises up another. The ballot box does not decide ultimate history.

The Federal Reserve does not hold ultimate authority over harvest and famine. God does.

Ravens, Ridicule, and the Contempt of God

One of the most striking elements of the Elijah narrative is the deliberate absurdity of God’s method.

He could have fed His prophet through a wealthy sympathizer. He could have arranged a diplomatic solution, a supply chain, a generous donor. Instead, He sent ravens. Scavenger birds. Unclean animals by Mosaic law, or at minimum, animals associated with wilderness and death. God fed His man by means that every sophisticated observer of the day would have found beneath dignity.

This was not an accident. It was a statement. Baalism was — and is — a religion of respectability, of visible power, of measurable results. God’s contempt for Baalism is most sharply expressed not in dramatic military victories but in the deliberate use of what the world considers foolish and weak.

He chose a fugitive prophet over a king. He chose ravens over royal storehouses. He chose a widow’s last meal over the state’s provision. This pattern reaches its fullest expression at the cross… the ultimate inversion of every Baalish calculus of power.

The Homesteader’s Theology

For the reader who has already made the practical turn… who has a garden, a well, stored food, and a wood stove… the theological point here is not abstract.

You already know, in your bones, that dependence on fragile, centralized systems is a form of vulnerability that no amount of political goodwill can fix. You have already, in practice, begun the long work of “de-Baalizing” your household economy.

But Rushdoony and Van Til would press the point further. Practical self-sufficiency without theological clarity becomes its own Baalism… just smaller, localized, tribal.

The goal is not merely independence from Big Government. The goal is dependence on God… a covenantal relationship in which the household, the family, the community lives explicitly under the law and provision of God rather than under the myth of human ultimacy in any form.

The Elijah model is not the hermit model. He was sent back into the world… to confront kings, call down fire, and train prophets. His time at Cherith was preparation, not retirement.

“Mishpat” Is Coming

The Hebrew word mishpat — righteousness, justice, judgment — is the prophetic antidote to every age of Baalism. It is the declaration that God’s law, not history’s winners, defines what is right.

Empires rise and fall. Central banks inflate and collapse. Political movements grow and then recede. None of this changes the governing word of the Lord. The cup of Psalm 75 is still being poured. The wicked of the earth will yet drink their dregs.

This is not pessimism. It is the most stable foundation available to any human being… the recognition that the God who commanded the drought, fed Elijah by ravens, and raised His Son from the dead is still, today, the Lord of history. Big Government is not. And it never was.
