Nepotism alive and well in these States
So, Uncle Joe has given a pardon to his son Hunter. My oh my.
And it seems to be a pretty broad pardon. And done without following the long-established traditional method of presidential pardons.
Most commentators – and even some that have (D) after their name (for real or just inferred) – seem to think this is a bad thing. For a number of reasons, including the fact that (once again) Uncle Joe reveals he is a liar and oath breaker. In a very straight-forward manner.
At the same time, most people seem to have taken for granted that Uncle Joe would do so. And as one other father pointed out to me, a father loves his son. Even when that son is a moral cripple and drug addict (recovering, perhaps, but still) who treats people like dirt and worse and had demonstrated absolutely no love for his own offspring. Several have suggested that Joe’s love for Hunter was a long time growing: otherwise, he would have loved him enough as a child and young man to not be a worthless parasite and serial abuser.
But hey, this is America in AD 2024. It is just one example of nepotism, an evil practice that is growing in popularity across the Fifty States.
Not that nepotism is exactly new here. We’ve seen it in action pretty much constantly since before Independence. Because, among other things, monarchy and a nobility is pretty much nothing but nepotism: someone gets to be king (or queen) or duke or count or duchess or countess strictly because one of their parents was. And that was a strong argument of the Founding Fathers for rejecting hereditary monarchy and titles of nobility.
But that didn’t stop nepotism in government here under the Constitution. We know that the sixth POTUS was the son of the 2nd POTUS. Admittedly, John Quincy Adams was a genius and an incredible diplomat and administrator and more. But still… We are perhaps very fortunate that neither George Washington nor Thomas Jefferson had recognized children who could have played up their parentage and used it for political power.
Unfortunately, the Harrison family (starting with Benjamin Harrison V during the War of Independence, and having both William Henry Harrison, 9th POTUS, and Benjamin Harrison, the 23rd POTUS) was a very long political dynasty. We all know about the Roosevelts, of course. And Tafts.
And in the late 20th and now 21st Centuries, it seems more and more federal and State politicians are members of families. Supposedly, they gain their positions by their own skills and service. But the evidence is strong that family ties – not just by blood but by marriage – are a major factor. Everyone knows the Kennedy clan. Many know of the Udalls.
While there are wealthy and powerful families whose descendants are equal in skills and able to follow a good moral compass even to the fourth and fifth generations and beyond. But whether in business, academia, military service, government service or politics, the third generation often – even commonly – demonstrates a lack of achievement. Often coupled with arrogance, a lack of morality, and other negative traits. We definitely can see that in numerous American political dynasties.
Sometimes, it is only the second generation that shows such deterioration. Of course, much of that has something to do with a lack of morals with the founder. Joe Kennedy Senior is such an example. Many of us believe that Honest Abe himself is another. In world history, we can look at the examples of Napoleon Bonaparte, Joseph Stalin, and many others.
This has been the case in decayed and degenerate religious groups for thousands of years. We see it in the Hebrew religion before and in the First Century. In Egyptian, Greek, and Roman heathen religions. And in Roman Catholicism and other christian denominations: in fact, the nepotism was so bad in the Roman Catholic Church that it led to the requirement that their priests be celibate. That is clearly the case in modern christian congregations and organizations.
And of course, business, fraternal organizations, and many other parts of human society.
Why does this happen? It appears to be a symptom that is also common in many less powerful and wealthy families as well. We submit it is a combination of a lack of proper education, being spoiled by growing up in a privileged and powerful family, and seeing the poor example set by their elders and those around them. It is not something that is limited to government, but it is a factor that is part of the vicious circle of human mandatory government.
It is also endemic: rather than try to eliminate nepotism in government, we suggest eliminating government and its power.
Because enough is enough.
