Happy 250th birthday, United States Army

AUSA (Association of the US Army, a private organization) tells us:

Happy 250th!

From the Revolutionary War to today, America’s Army has steadfastly served and defended the nation before the nation was even born. On Saturday, the service marks its 250th birthday with events across the country and a huge bash on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

What to Watch: AUSA will mark the Army’s milestone birthday with a three-day, once-in-a-lifetime celebration in Philadelphia, the birthplace of American independence. From Friday through Sunday, there will be an enlistment ceremony for 250 new soldiers, reenactments, concerts, commemorative ceremonies and community tributes—culminating in a grand celebration on Independence Mall, where the American Army’s story began.

Freedom – and liberty – always has a price. That is the firm belief of all of us here at The Price of Liberty, as it was of our founder Lady Susan Calloway – Mama Liberty. That price is often paid not just in the blood of tyrants but in the blood of lovers of liberty. Sadly, many who have sacrificed limb and life have done so in a state of misunderstanding exactly what they were actually fighting for. And many more paid those prices because of the stupid actions of politicians and their own leaders. That should not distract from their service, nor from their sacrifice.

But, it does.

Nevertheless, the American Army is worth remembering and honoring for 250 years of service, including 238 years of its official mission of preserving and protecting the US Constitution, which is intended (whatever its many faults) to protect the liberties: the rights; of the people of these united States.

But we celebrate this day as much in disappointment as in gladness. For at least 80 years, since the surrender of Germany and Japan, most Americans – and all of those in political power – have shared an assumption: The American people, and therefore, our common government, can have a giant military-industrial complex wielding its might around the globe… but we, the American people, and our States, can still have individual liberty and limited government here at home.

To the Founding Fathers, this is crazy. Remember what James Madison wrote in 1795. “Of all the enemies to public liberty war is, perhaps, the most to be dreaded, because it comprises and develops the germ of every other.

“War is the parent of armies; from these proceed debts and taxes; and armies, and debts, and taxes are the known instruments for bringing the many under the domination of the few… No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare.”

We here at TPOL submit that Mr. Madison was a prophet. Precisely what he predicted has been demonstrated to be true, even while his statement was constantly disputed. Beginning with the War between the States, reaching crazy levels during the American intervention in the Great War (WW1), well over the boiling point in WW2, and continuously since 1947, it has been demonstrated that not just active warfare on a large scale proves Mr. Madison right: constant mobilization for war (note: not preparation) has been the American way of life, and has constantly not just sustained and powered the standing army the Founding Fathers rightly feared, but promoted debt, taxes, and the regulatory and fearful mindset that had eroded away our freedom.

What those of us here at TPOL, even while serving honorably, have lived through. As did our parents for most of their lives. And of course, as now our children (and grandchildren) are doing.

There is a solution: (1) Return the US Army to its original mission of protecting the homeland from within the homeland: leave the necessary protections of the freedom of the seas and protection of Americans (and our liberties) outside the Fifty States to the Navy, its Marines, and now (perhaps) the Space Force. (2) Convert as much as possible of the Army and Air Force to reserve – and indeed, to National Guard – forces. Keeping as essential a tiny, tiny professional force that is first and foremost the training establishment and the necessary command and control elements to properly wield the forces provided by the States to defend the Constitution, our people, our land, and our commerce and economy, and of course, coordinate with and support the Navy, its Marines, and the Space Force. (3) Develop established methods of mutual aid between the States to reduce the need for federal forces, federal control, federal dollars, and above all, federalization.

These are simple steps with an amazingly complex and difficult list of tasks, performance measure. But they can be done. An American, a United States Army, perhaps with as many as 3-4 million members, of which all but perhaps as few as 200,000 would be “weekend warriors” – serving in their home States 11 weekends and two-three weeks a year, living their oaths to preserve and protect the Constitution and defend our liberties, our freedom, and our homes.

It can be done. If we wish to begin to regain our liberty, to restore our freedom, something like this must be done.
