It’s Time For Bitcoiners To Become Pillars of Their Communities

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

I promise I won’t ask you to become normies. Please read on.

It seems there are easily a hundred thousand Bitcoin (or crypto) millionaires, with more reaching that level as the numbers rise. A million dollars isn’t actually that much money anymore, but it makes a nice marker all the same.

Bitcoiners, then, are becoming people of means. Some more, some less of course, but if you think back on your expectations as you started this journey, you may have to concede that you’re at least somewhat well-off.

The number of sats in our wallets doesn’t mean anything about us as people, but having means gives us new choices to make.

So, do we want to live in our garret apartments forever, or do we want to live full lives and improve the world while we’re at it? What’s the purpose of this whole thing anyway?

As it happens, we are positioned to be of more help to our friends and neighbors than hiding out and being right. And the crucial thing is this: We can now choose our way of life.

Where And How Do We Want To Live?

Some of us, perhaps, will want to spend the rest of our lives flying around and staying in scenic places. Others may want to be tycoons of one sort or another. But the vast majority of us, after considering all the options, will see that what we really want is a loving family. Humans are just that way.

Now, before we get to being pillars of a community, we must first pick a community. And so we’ll start with this choice. Some of us will want to stay in the town we grew up in, but even a small town provides a range of choices.

Let’s begin by saying that there’s no place in the world that’s without problems at the moment, and so I think it best to find one that works well enough rather than fixating on flaws and waiting forever for perfection.

One of the best choices is on the far outskirts of a big city. If you choose carefully, you can be surrounded by farms and/or woods, and still be able to reach a major airport in not too many minutes. Ditto for things like museums and symphony orchestras.

The place you’ll want is where the bulk of the residents are productive families. Yes, you’ll have to put up with taxes (some which can be mitigated and some not), but so is the world at this point.

Here are a few additional factors that I’ve come to regard as important for picking your spot:

    • You want to live among people who are trying to be good, which generally means that that they go to church. A town with thriving churches is almost always better than a place that’s religiously dry. Regardless of the doctrinal stuff, religious people dedicate time, regularly, to being good. Such people also help one another. They likewise tend to be reliable and understanding. Never perfect, of course, but better in important ways.
    • Your immediate neighbors matter.
    • You want a place where productive young people are having babies. Having children matures and motivates people in ways that almost nothing else can. And people who have babies are invested in the future, which matters in subtle but crucial ways.
    • You want to live among people with high expectations: people who have purpose, who have goals, who expect excellence rather than stagnation. (Later you’ll want such people as spouses for your children.) Again, these are never going to be perfect people, but people who seek excellence are far better to live among than people who’ve given up.

Rebels As Pillar Of The Community?

Most of us began as outsiders and rebels, for which we should never be ashamed. We must, however, understand that being a rebel for the sake of being a rebel is just another form of attaching to a role… like a normie. We were rebels because the world wasn’t ready for what we knew was right.

Our commitment, then, should be to the good and right, not to playing the rebel role. And so we can be part of a community and still live our way. It has been quite a few years now; many people have become willing to accommodate us. Their growth does not negate our virtues.

It’s time for the rebels to improve their communities, and we don’t need to surrender to do that. Rather, we can engage in a new and potent way.

The popular image of “pillar of the community” is very often a skewed and unkind one… one seated in communist envy. In actual fact, at least in the US and Canada, the social structure of the 19th century’s astonishing progress was anchored by people of means. In a thousand towns, such people quitely looked after their neighbors.

These are the people who fixed problems and supported the virtuous, long before the nanny state usurped them and branded all rich people as abusers. They played a crucial role, interestingly quite similar to the role of the good clergy in medieval Europe. Regardless of the bad clergy getting 100 percent of the press, there were good clergy in more or less every European town, who looked after the poor, the struggling family and so on.

This role, of people with ability looking out for the people of their neighborhood or town, is one that needs to come back if we want a world that’s fit to live in. And guess who’s just been given the means to play it.
