Be eaten… or shoot… or be?
Government stupidity is always with us: An incredibly strong argument for why human, mandatory government is dangerous, immoral, and to be avoided. Or put down.
Consider Yellowstone National Park. And visit this story in Cowboy State Daily.
To put it simply, the old government ban on carrying (open or concealed) weapons for self-defense has been overturned. You can legally have a weapon on you in national parks: the FedGov was forced to follow the Bill of Rights. At least partially.
The problem? Stupid laws.
It’s illegal to even so much as point a firearm at a wild animal in Yellowstone Park, so bear spray would be the only allowable defense in case of a bear attack. While it’s legal to carry firearms both open and concealed in Yellowstone, it’s not legal to brandish, aim, or shoot them there guns. Not at animals, not at people, and not even targets.
This is apparently applicable to every NPS site.
It isn’t just stupid tourists going up to pet the “fuzzy cows” (American bison: buffalo). It isn’t even a matter of baiting a bear and getting attacked, killed, and eaten. (Presumably in that order.) It does happen, as this story from a few years back relates. An experienced guide in Yellowstone was killed by a grizzly.
It isn’t just national parks or grizzlies. Very recently, a Wisconsin woman was released from two weeks in the hospital after being attacked near her home by a black bear. Authorities couldn’t find the bear. As another article states, Wisconsin has at least 24,000 bears living in the State. (It is unknown how many may be border jumpers escaping from tyranny in Canada or elsewhere.)
But national parks suffer from the tragedy of the commons in so many ways. Another recent example is the four-year-old child attacked by a mountain lion in Olympic National Park. Again, parents and others were not armed and unable to react as they should have been allowed to do.
Punishment for “brandishing” or actually using a firearm may vary – so you get to depend on the non-existent goodwill of Federal District Attorneys and Federal judges. Regardless of who appointed them.
We know that predators – both human and animal – tend to infest national parks. Why? The pickings are easy. Hunters can’t thin herds, even of non-predatory animals. (See Rocky Mountain National Park and elk problems there.) Wolves have been reintroduced into more and more areas, and grizzlies are expanding their range across many States, especially the mountains, but also in the Great Plains. In the past several years, there have been more and more reports of unprovoked attacks on humans by elk. And a bison doesn’t need to have tourists coming up to get selfies and pet them to decide to attack a human. And even a human vehicle.
There was a reason that populations of grizzlies, other bears, wolves, and mountain lions in much of North America were decimated back in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It wasn’t just greed for grazing ranges and “racist” attacks on AmerInd society and economy. It was because these animals are dangerous and known to kill not just pets and livestock, but humans. Or seriously harm them.
But governments are far more willing to listen to the appeals of environists (who seemingly lack the mental capability to understand nature or reality) and hoplophobes and hoploclasts (fearers and haters of guns) than they are to carry out the responsibility they supposedly have to protect their citizens (and visitors and even border jumpers).
Lawmakers are the worst, of course – all they care about is money, which in turn makes them concerned about votes to get into and stay in office, and of course, the money to go out and buy those votes, and let them retire wealthy. But the bureaucracy including such environist, Woke organizations like “Grand Old Broads” and many “educated” in mega-universities and hired by dozen
With a large and growing population of humans, and courtesy of other government stupidity, there is a need to limit hunting. That could be done by non-governmental agencies, such as the various private organizations and foundations for buffalo, elk, turkeys, pheasants, and other species.
