The fist of tyranny – tighter and tighter?

Most readers are familiar with the saying (apparently attributed to Thomas Merton), The more you squeeze, the less you have.

When it comes to the Imperial regime of the District of Criminals, this certainly appears to be the case. The FedGov is no longer content with the enemies it claims to have long had: The Donald and his minions seem to be searching out for – and making – more.

Of course, American governments have long demonstrated a certain lack of finesse at both diplomacy and intelligence gathering and interpreting. And Congress has long demonstrated the old saying about the intelligence of a committee. But in recent months – even days! – this seems to be accelerating.

Externally: we seem to have long accepted that Russia must be an enemy, regardless of their political and economic system. Ditto for China. Of course we can smile at the antics of the People’s Democratic Republic of Korea (North Korea), the rabid Satan-baiting of Iran (Persia), and a few other places.

Venezuela has long been on the list of enemies of the (FedGov) state, of course. Together with Cuba, Libya, and Yemen.

But DC isn’t content with that: we continue to mistreat those whom we have most to gain from socially and economically, notably Canada and Mexico. But the White House and Congress aren’t satisfied with that. We must constantly tick off more and more of Europe: most recently Spain (with the tariffs). And of course, Denmark, long the most pro-American of EU members (with Trump’s Greenland gambit).

We are not saying that what many of these nations are doing is not a reason to get upset with them. Indeed, despite their supposed professionalism at diplomacy and foreign affairs, a good many nations seem very much to enjoy baiting the American bear (eagle). But the way DC reacts to that is at best a sick display of hamhandedness.

We point out that it is not just Trump doing this: the Biden regime also displayed a lot of arrogance and disdain for both allies and enemies. Indeed, we can go back a century and more to see this sort of nonsense seems to be an unfailing character trait (and weakness) of the FedGov.

Internally? Well, the Founding Fathers believed not just in a balance of power within the FedGov itself (Legislative, Judicial, and Executive branches). Nor just in the balance of power between the Senate and the House of Representatives, within Congress. But also a constant state of friction between the States and both the FedGov and each other.

Despite all the rhetoric to the contrary, DC still tries to gain more and more power over the States. Through a mixture of laws, regulations, imperial decrees (executive orders), and of course, judicial decisions and interpretations of regulations.

The major reason we are not more worried about the mailed fist of tyranny here in the States is Merton’s comment: the more the FedGov squeezes, the more things escape. Little things, maybe. But a lot of little things make a big difference. So, contrary to reason that it may be, let the FedGov squeeze their fist a bit more. And see what happens.

This is doubly true for the States. Again, both blue and red. Draconian laws generate pushback. As well they should! And it is more than just people voting with their feet. Corruption, tyrannical enactments, and just plain stupidity on the part of legislatures and officers of State governments really cause people to get fed up. That may be what rescues New York City from its currently predicted win by a Communist.

But it is important to remember that what gets squeezed out does not look much at all like what was getting squeezed in that fist. The short- and long-term consequences may be hard to live with. Both at home and abroad.
