New Mexico -home of the fee, land of the rave(ing mad)

Welcome to one of the Socialist States of America.

Ruled by Her Imperial Majesty, Michelle (I) Lujan Grisham, since 2019, the State has increasingly become both more socialist and returned more to its origin and roots as a (now-“independent”) province of Imperial Spain. It is a curious mix of bizarre sects and “alternative lifestyles” and traditional Spanish, AmerInd culture, and high-tech. It is both poor and expensive to live in.

One of the most recent examples is the “Universal Child Care” plan pushed by HIMajesty and gladly accepted by the State’s Woke legislature. Every child in the State will now be entitled to receive free childcare, both preschool and apparently before and after school hours.

This will cost an estimated $600 million a year, we are told. The money, we are also told, will come from the State’s “sovereign wealth fund.” A fund apparently created using oil and gas revenues (that is, taxes on oil and gas production) in New Mexico. (While certainly not the equal of Texas, Wyoming, or North Dakota, New Mexico has significant reserves.)

Although the program began a month ago, on 1 November, there are still many things we don’t know about it.

It is definitely an income redistribution scheme, even though there are no income requirements: the millionaire or billionaire will pay $0 for child care, just as will the single mother working parttime at a convenience store. The State estimates it will “save” the average New Mexican family $12,000 a year: there will be no copays. Whatever the source of funds, some people and companies will pay taxes to support this. And the additional $33 million in “child care center” improvements. (Note: the program it replaces was very similar: families with FOUR TIMES the federal poverty level of income (about $124,000 for a family of four) and less were eligible in the past.)

In addition, it seems that the child care workers must be paid a minimum of $18/hour, well above State and federal minimum hourly wages.

It is a licensing and control scheme. Apparently even home care providers will be required to be licensed and registered. Presumably, both home settings and center settings will be subject to inspections to ensure that they meet State standards. Along with suitable penalties, of course. We do not know what those standards will require. But based on past history of New Mexico and the other States and the FedGov, we can expect prohibitions on religious training. (At least when it comes to “christian” and “jewish” teaching, but not Pueblo or Inde (Apache, including Dineh (Navajo) teaching. Islam? Buddhism? Azteca? Who knows?) We can also expect requirements to promote LGBTQ and other politically correct “lifestyles” to be required. It would be no surprise to find, ultimately, a long list of compulsory and forbidden topics to be taught.

It is a vote-buying scheme. “Look what the Democratic governor and Democratic legislature has given us! They are so wonderful, we must keep them all in office!”

It is a scheme meant to benefit, preserve, and even expand government-run tax-funded (public) schools, which will be major beneficiaries of this largess. Thus, combating the distressing tendency of many New Mexicans to pull children out of public schools and into home and private schooling.

And of course, it is a very socialist scheme. As was explained in novels such as 1984 and Brave New World, and seen in Revolutionary France, the Paris Commune, every Communist regime, and many socialist (including fascist) regimes, government tax-funded and government-controlled child care is provided and usually mandated.

New Mexico is a poor State, in large part due to its Iberian heritage. That still impacts life in the State on a daily basis, despite more than a century of Statehood and nearly two of American rule. Spain and then Ciudad Mexico ruled (or at least tried to rule) New Mexico for nearly three centuries before that. A large part of that is the government and its sovereign powers and heritage.

Of course, most media and “childhood and family advocates” loudly applaud and shout loud hosannas over this. Even some geopolitical analysts (such as Peter Ziehan) hail this as an attempt to reverse demographic trends and end the spiral of depopulation and societal collapse. To us at TPOL this seems a bit of a stretch and fraught with dangers of consequences. Unintended and intended. Of particular note will be the change of migration patterns into New Mexico, both from other States and from foreign nations (including, of course, Mexico and all of MesoAmerica).

We argue this is not a lifeboat situation; some form of socialism is not essential to New Mexico to overcome its self-inflicted conditions of poverty, poor education, government abuse, and corruption.
