Another war
Yesterday’s attack by Israeli and US forces on Iran has within hours expanded to include a dozen different nations.
As usual, we have nowhere near enough information to figure out what is really going on. The claims made by various and sundry (including The Donald and Bibi) seem to be contradictory and are challenged by people in all corners of the political diamond. Not just in Israel and the States, but around the world.
On the one hand, we have Democrats hypocritically proclaiming “the Constitution says that Congress has the power (the only power) to declare war.” Oops: remember Truman? Johnson? Carter? Obummer? Even Uncle Joe? Where were most Democrats then? Of course, the Republicans are no better: Eisenhower, Nixon, Ford (as we recall), Bush I and II, and of course, our beloved The Donald himself. (We do note, as interesting, that Senator Fetterman apparently is not going along with it. And that Senator Kelly, despite demanding that the now “overtaken by events” War Powers Resolution be voted upon immediately (tomorrow morning?), does not seem to recall any of his oaths to uphold the Constitution: he only writes about the nuts and bolts, saying only that Congress needs to do its Constitutional duty. And babbles on about preventing the expansion of a war and The Donald failing at lowering costs for families.
He chides The Donald for promising to keep us out of war and failing to do so. Well, good for Senator Kelly, but The Donald is being no different in that than, say, Democrat Woodrow Wilson, who didn’t keep us out of the Great War. Why doesn’t Senator Kelly get some of his Democratic buddies in the House of Representatives to introduce articles of impeachment against The Donald for not just unconstitutionally starting a war, but failing to keep campaign (and “fresh-in-office”) promises?
Not that the GOP types (both those who support and those who oppose The Donald) are any better.
Meanwhile, we once again may be giving false hope to the Persian (we know, “Iranian”) lovers of liberty and seekers of freedom. Now that the “Supreme Leader” and Ayatollah is dead (if we can believe that), is he just going to be replaced by another Ayatollah? While the Iranian Islamic Republic seems to be spasming as it launches attacks all over the place? Or is the 47-year-old regime and occupier of Persia going to really be overthrown and replaced by something that allows and defends even a bit more liberty – with or without a new Shah? (We point out that some generally-libertarian writers have postulated that a constitutional monarch can actually defend liberty for all much better than a democracy.
But for now, the missiles are rising and falling, the bombs dropping, the lasers and more shooting out. And people dying. And although it is a weekend, prices and fears are rising, and many share prices are dropping, along with the bombs and the people.
There are many odd features, but not so many answers to questions.
But once again, we see that the Psalmist’s statement, “Put not your trust in princes” holds true. Pray for the people who are being killed (and killing) by the powers that be, and for those who are not yet dragged into the war. And act: tell people something has got to change.
