Oil Spill Off UAE Coast Widens, More Beaches Closed, After Tanker Hit

The disastrous oil spill impacting the United Arab Emirate’s coast is spreading, which has resulted in government authorities closing more beaches.

“Satellite images show the oil spill approaching the Emirate’s northern Umm Al Quwain shores. Efforts are underway to contain the leakage, the UAE’s Environment Ministry said,” as quoted in Al Jazeera.

And Reuters writes Monday, “Images from the European Union’s Copernicus satellite observation network dated October 24 show the oil spill has widened over the last few days ​and is reaching close to the shores of the northern Umm Al Quwain emirate, with dark layers ​of oil spreading at sea and along its coastline.”

Further, Bloomberg confirms: “Sharjah said Al Hamriya Beach has been closed as a precautionary measure to prevent pollution from the oil spill. Ras Al Khaimah said that all its beaches are closed until further notice, without specifying the reason for the closure.”

International reports have identified that the leak resulted from the Oct.9 incident involving the GEM NO.2 tanker, which had been detailed by the UKMTO. However, Emirati authorities have yet to specifically name the leaking tanker, despite that it has been identified by multiple maritime monitors.

“Gem No. 2, was hit by a projectile Friday off the coast of the UAE resulting in a fire onboard. The ship departed Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia, in March and has remained in the Persian Gulf since the war began,” as reported by UKTMO earlier this month.

The last week saw increasing complaints by beach area residents of unusual smells – reports that were initially brushed off by local authorities.

Nidal Hilal, Professor of Engineering and Director of New York University Abu Dhabi’s Water Research Center, comments: “The reported oil spill off Umm Al Quwain is a serious environmental concern. The temporary ​closure of beaches and coastal areas is a prudent precaution while the extent of ​the spill and ⁠the movement of the oil are assessed.”

The emerging environmental disaster also impacts the local fishing industry, and boats have been advised to steer clear of the area until a full environmental assessment can be done.

Amid the record pace in Iranian attacks on crude tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, many have been wondering where all of that oil ends up when a tanker sinks or gets severely damaged.

Given that the Iranians have recently stepped up their attacks on shipping in the region, more such major spills could soon unfold. This is also likely to be an environmental and economic disaster that’s slow-moving and potentially becomes widespread.
