California's Deadliest Time to Drive Isn't Rush Hour

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Most Californians assume the most dangerous time to drive is during the morning commute or the evening rush.

The data says otherwise.

A new analysis of California traffic fatalities found the deadliest three-hour period on the state’s roads isn’t during peak traffic at all. Instead, it occurs between 9 p.m. and midnight, when roads are quieter, visibility drops and dangerous driving behaviors become far more common.

Researchers examining California’s 2024 traffic fatality data found that 299 people were killed during this three-hour window alone, making it the deadliest period of the day statewide.

That figure was more than three times higher than the safest period, between 9 a.m. and noon.

Why Are California Roads So Dangerous After Dark?

According to the study, several factors repeatedly emerge during late-night fatal crashes.

Alcohol impairment remains one of the biggest contributors. In 2024, alcohol-related crashes were linked to 943 deaths across California. Speeding accounted for another 965 fatalities, making it the leading cause of traffic deaths statewide.

Late-night drivers are also more likely to experience fatigue, reduced reaction times and poor visibility.

The combination can be deadly.

While there may be fewer vehicles on the road, those who are driving often face significantly greater risks.

Friday Nights Are Particularly Deadly

The data revealed another striking trend.

Friday nights recorded the highest fatality totals of any day of the week, with deaths occurring at rates dramatically higher than those seen during the safest weekdays. Weekend travel, social gatherings and impaired driving all appear to contribute to the increase.

For many Californians, Friday evening represents the start of a relaxing weekend.

For traffic safety officials, it represents the beginning of one of the most dangerous periods on the road.

A Handful of Counties Account for Most Deaths

Researchers also found that traffic fatalities are heavily concentrated in a relatively small number of counties.

Just ten counties accounted for roughly 69% of all traffic deaths in California during 2024.

Los Angeles County recorded the highest total, followed by San Bernardino, San Diego and Riverside. Together, these areas represent some of the busiest transportation corridors in the state.

The Good News

Unlike many public safety problems, the leading causes of these crashes are largely preventable.

Speeding, impaired driving and seatbelt non-use accounted for a substantial portion of California’s traffic deaths in 2024. Researchers point to targeted DUI enforcement, increased late-night patrols, improved lighting and better road design as measures that could significantly reduce fatalities.

The data paints a clear picture.

California’s deadliest driving period is not hidden.

It’s not random.

And it isn’t rush hour.

For hundreds of families each year, the most dangerous time to be on the road begins when most people assume the worst of the traffic is already over.
