Former SC Elections Director Indicted by Feds For Embezzlement

I’m glad some of these people are being caught.  Sadly, they won’t receive real justice. Yet, former Aiken County Elections Director Cynthia Holland had a federal indictment issued against her for embezzlement.

A federal indictment issued Tuesday, July 16, 2024 alleged that former Aiken County Elections Director Cynthia Holland embezzled at least $62,664 from around April 2016 through November 2022 from the US Social Security Administration. See the indictment from the grand jury at the bottom of this article.

Holland resigned as the Aiken County Elections Director in mid-May, right before the primary, after serving as the director for twelve years. Ironically, executive director of the South Carolina Election Commission, Howard Knapp, told the Post and Courier back in June that “The No. 1 issue Aiken County is going to have is paying enough.” When Cynthia resigned as the Aiken County Elections director, she was salaried at $71,113.33 annually. Knapp stated that the annual salary needed to be increased to “at least $80,000…” It seems that was around what Cynthia would have made based on the alleged indictment.

This isn’t the first time the Aiken County Elections office has surfaced regarding suspicious activity. Following the 2022 midterm elections, Palmetto State Watch exposed the Aiken County elections office for apparently falsifying hand count audit document time stamps back in November of 2022. Palmetto State Watch alerted Aiken elected officials and the local election delegation to this possible felony, and it was quickly swept under the rug.

Cynthia Holland is also still listed as the president of the South Carolina Association of Registration and Election Officials (SCARE). According to their website, the purpose of SCARE is to “provide a forum for registration and elected officials to study, discuss, and recommend improvements in registration/election laws” among similar objectives.

It’s a little SCAREy that the president of SCARE has been allegedly embezzling taxpayer money while leading elections and presiding over all election officials in South Carolina.
