President Donald Trump declared that the U.S. ceasefire and interim peace agreement with Iran is officially “over”, warning on July 8, 2026, that the American military will “very probably hit them hard again tonight” to finish the job. Speaking from the NATO Summit in Ankara, Turkey, Trump called Iranian leadership “scum” and “lying” people, stating that further negotiations are a “waste of time”. The June 17 memorandum of understanding—which had paused the month-long war for a 60-day negotiating window—collapsed rapidly following a sharp escalation of hostilities in the Persian Gulf.
While U.S. negotiators like Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff remain authorized to talk, Trump emphasized that the U.S. will forcefully enforce freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz by military means, bypassing the framework of a formal deal if necessary to “de-nuclearize” the regime.
Despite a temporary pause in fighting to allow for funeral services for the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran targeted three commercial cargo ships in the strategic Strait of Hormuz. At Trump’s direction, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) launched powerful retaliatory airstrikes, hitting over 80 targets including Iranian air defenses, radar systems, and Revolutionary Guard vessels. In response to the U.S. bombardment, Iranian forces launched retaliatory missile and drone attacks targeting American military facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait.
As full-scale conflict threatens to resume, the United States is rapidly escalating its military and economic pressure against Tehran. Late Wednesday night, CENTCOM announced that forces began conducting a second consecutive day of airstrikes inside Iran to further degrade their capability to threaten global shipping lanes. The U.S. Treasury completely canceled the temporary license which had allowed Iran to openly sell its oil in U.S. dollars, giving entities until July 17 to wind down all transactions. Trump has threatened a return to an all-out naval blockade and suggested the U.S. may target Iran’s civilian infrastructure, including power networks, desalinization plants, and the vital oil-exporting hub of Kharg Island.
