Iranian airlines have canceled flights to several international destinations after severe new U.S. secondary sanctions targeted any airports and service providers refueling or servicing Iranian carriers.
Flights from Tehran to Baghdad (Iraq), Muscat (Oman), Tbilisi (Georgia), and all airports in Azerbaijan have been suspended or blocked following the U.S. Treasury’s enforcement deadline. Major Iranian carrier Mahan Air halted routes to Istanbul, Ankara, and Muscat. International operators like Turkish Airlines, Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Lufthansa previously suspended their own flights into Iran. Select flights to destinations like China (Guangzhou/Shanghai), Kabul, Dubai, and Armenia (via smaller carriers like Varesh) have continued to operate or face shifting schedules on a case-by-case basis.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that any global airport or fueling/service provider transacting with Iranian-operated planes risks being completely cut off from the U.S. financial system. Tehran threatened retaliatory disruptions against neighboring countries that comply with the American aviation restrictions. Stranded passengers and regional agencies face immense instability, forcing many travelers to look into uncertain overland border routes instead.
