Everyone’s heard of ‘DOOMSDAY’ and generally understands its serious connotations.

But what if there was something more to this scenario of devastation and destruction?

A standard dictionary search gives us the following meanings:

i) the last day of the world’s existence. “Bede believed that the time of DOOMSDAY is concealed from mankind”.

ii) (in religious belief) the day of the Last Judgement. iii) a time or event of crisis or great danger. “in all the concern over greenhouse warming, one DOOMSDAY scenario stands out”.

iv) a time of catastrophic destruction and death.

Alternative historical spellings include DOMESDAY and DOMESDEI.

Casting some light into the shadows, we may discover some ‘hidden’ meanings for these words.

OCULUS: a round or eye-like opening or design, such as a circular window or an opening at the apex of a DOME.

What were the origins of the name of the book by which it is now universally known?

The “Domesday Book” is clearly no official title; it is a popular appellation, of which the meaning is not quite free from doubt.

Officially, the record was known as the “Book of Winchester,” from the city in which it was kept. It was cited under that name when the Abbot of Abingdon, in the reign of Henry I., proved by it the exemption of certain of his estates from the hundred court of Pyrton, Oxfordshire.

The ‘best’ explanation of its other, more famous name may be given in the words of Richard Fitz Neal, writing under Henry II.:

“This book is called by the natives, ‘DOMESDEI’, that is by a metaphor the day of judgment, for as the sentence of that strict and terrible last scrutiny may by no craft be evaded, so when a dispute arises concerning those matters which are written in this book, it is consulted, and its sentence may not be impugned nor refused with safety.” [Dialogus de Saccario (ed. 1902), p. 108.]
