Industrial and Solar Applications Other patents use the term “smart dust” to describe automated systems for controlling particulate matter:

• US20240139668A1: A “Smart dust suppression system” that uses an atomized water spraying fan to suppress dust at the source in industrial sites like cement factories and ports. 

• US9899957B2: A “Smart dust-cleaner and cooler” for solar PV panels, utilizing a transparent shield and membrane vibrators to dislodge dust and improve panel efficiency.

  Invisible and Non-Consensual Data Collection The primary concern is the physical invisibility of smart dust motes. Because these microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) are sub-millimeter in size, individuals cannot know when or where they are being monitored. This makes obtaining explicit consent practically impossible, as users are often unaware that their biometric data—such as heart rate, body temperature, gait, voice patterns, and even facial images—is being harvested in real-time.  This capability transforms everyday environments into pervasive surveillance zones without the subject’s knowledge. 

  Irreversibility of Biometric Breaches Unlike passwords or PINs, biometric data is immutable. If a smart dust network is compromised and the collected biometric profiles are stolen, individuals cannot “reset” their fingerprints, voice prints, or physiological signatures. This creates a permanent security vulnerability where stolen data can be used for identity theft or unauthorized access indefinitely. The centralized storage required to process this vast amount of data creates high-value targets for cyberattacks. 

  Surveillance and Autonomy Concerns

  Function Creep and Profiling There is a significant risk of “function creep,” where data collected for one purpose (e.g., payment authentication in the Wells Fargo patent) is repurposed for unrelated surveillance, marketing, or behavioral analysis. The integration of smart dust with AI allows for the creation of comprehensive behavioral profiles, tracking daily routines, health status, and private interactions. This level of granular data collection threatens personal autonomy and could lead to a society where individuals are constantly monitored and scored.

There are no specific standards governing the deployment, data retention, or encryption of smart dust networks. This regulatory gap leaves individuals vulnerable to misuse by both corporate entities and malicious actors, who could potentially deploy their own sensor swarms to spy on competitors or individuals.
