MIT Professor Ted Postol: Did Israel Test a Nuke in Syria?
Theodore A. Postol is a physicist and professor emeritus of Science, Technology, and National Security Policy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He earned his undergraduate degree in physics and his Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from MIT.
Early in his career, Postol conducted research at Argonne National Laboratory, focusing on the microscopic dynamics and structure of liquids and disordered solids. He later served as an analyst at the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment, where he studied methods of basing the MX missile, and as a scientific adviser to the Chief of Naval Operations at the Pentagon.
After his tenure at the Pentagon, Postol joined Stanford University, contributing to a program that trained mid-career scientists in weapons technology related to defense and arms control policy. In 1989, he returned to MIT as a professor, where he continued his work in science, technology, and national security policy.
Throughout his career, Postol has been recognized for his incisive technical analysis of national security issues. He received the Leo Szilard Prize from the American Physical Society in 1990, the Hilliard Roderick Prize from the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1995, and the Norbert Wiener Award from Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility in 2001.
Postol is known for his critical assessments of U.S. missile defense systems. He challenged the reported success rates of the Patriot missile during the Gulf War, suggesting that its effectiveness was significantly overstated. Additionally, he has critiqued various U.S. government analyses of chemical attacks in Syria, raising questions about the methodologies and conclusions presented.
His work has significantly influenced public policy debates on national security, arms control, and the technical aspects of missile defense systems. Postol’s commitment to rigorous analysis and his willingness to challenge prevailing narratives have established him as a prominent figure in the field of science and international security.
