3 Ideas for Humanely Removing Squirrels From Your House

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Squirrels may be harmless when they are running around your yard or climbing your trees, but they can cause a lot of trouble if they get into your house. They should always be removed as quickly as possible, and there are plenty of ways to do that without hurting them. Here are just three things you can do to remove squirrels from your house humanely.

1. Provide a Quick Exit for the Squirrel

Squirrels often don’t mean to invade your home. In many cases, get stuck inside while looking for food, water, or shelter. They don’t want to be in your home and will try to escape. If that is the case in your house, the best thing you can do is make it easy for the squirrel to leave. To do this, first remove any pets from the area where the squirrel is trapped. The squirrel is scared enough without a dog or a cat trying to catch it. Next, remove any possible food sources that could tempt the squirrel to stay. Finally, close all the doors to other parts of your house and open a door or window leading outside. The squirrel should make its way out after a few minutes.

If the squirrel won’t leave and is cowering in a corner, put on some heavy gloves and try to catch it in a blanket. Approach the squirrel slowly, throw the blanket on top of it, and wrap it up tightly enough to secure it but not so tight that you hurt it. Carry the squirrel outside and let it go.

2. Scare Away Squirrels Living in Your Attic

If squirrels get into your attic through an opening in your roof, you can try scaring them out by making loud noises. Bang on the ceiling and walls, bang pots and pans together loudly, and leave your radio or TV on throughout the day or night. If loud noise doesn’t get the squirrels to leave, you can set up lights where the squirrels are located and leave them on throughout the day and night or soak rags in cider vinegar and leave them in your attic. Squirrels hate the smell of vinegar and may leave your attic to get away from it.

3. Contact a Professional Wildlife Service

If your attempts to get rid of the squirrels in your home fail, contact a professional wildlife service to take care of them. Professional wildlife services are different from exterminators in that they will remove squirrels and other wildlife from your home humanely. If they can’t get the squirrels in your home to leave on their own, they will find ways to trap them alive and release them in the wild. If a squirrel is nesting and has babies, the babies will also be removed safely. You won’t have to worry about poisons or traps that could hurt your family or pets, nor will you have to worry about harming any wildlife.

The most important thing to remember about squirrels in your home is that they often don’t want to be there. The goal is to help them leave safely, not to hurt them. If you can’t get rid of squirrels on your own, make sure that any pest control or wildlife service you hire removes the animals safely from your home.
