The Trump administration has released over 230,000 pages of documents related to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., fulfilling a transparency directive issued by President Donald Trump. The release was announced by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and includes details about the FBI’s investigation into King’s assassination, internal memos tracking the progress of the case, and information about James Earl Ray, the man convicted of assassinating Dr. King.
The documents, released in partnership with the Justice Department, Central Intelligence Agency, National Archives, and the FBI, detail the federal investigation into the shooting at Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee, which resulted in King’s death. The files also include CIA intelligence gathered during the international search for Ray after he fled the United States, as well as foreign law enforcement records from a Canadian police department that became involved during his time abroad.
King’s family, including his two living children, Martin III and Bernice, were given advance notice of the release and had their own teams reviewing the records ahead of the public disclosure. They issued a statement after the government’s release, expressing their personal grief and asking those who engage with the files to do so with empathy, restraint, and respect for their family’s continuing grief.
The documents are now available to the public at archives.gov/mlk, where they have been published online with minimal redactions for privacy reasons. This release follows the March 2025 release of the remaining JFK assassination files under the same executive order.
