God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater by Kurt Vonnegut

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Possibly suffering from PTSD, Eliot Rosewater turns his back on his wealth and moves to a small Indiana town where he practices selfless acts of philanthropy to the town’s varied inhabitants.

An unscrupulous lawyer, greedy to get his hands on the Rosewater wealth, finds a loophole whereby finding Eliot insane, will get his assets forfeited.

Eliot Rosewater is considered a saint by the residents of Rosewater, Indiana, although he certainly has his vices, such as liquor and abandoning his family. His simple and generous ways keep him out of the realities of the capitalistic society he has shunned.

Stephen Miller could be the ghost of Norman Mushari, an intolerant and greedy lawyer searching for ways to discredit Eliot.

Fred Rosewater, a bumbling and distant relative of Eliot’s is sought out by Mushari as a mark in a scheme to get money away from the Rosewater Foundation’s heir apparent. Only Vonnegut could make Fred’s suicide attempts more slapstick than sad.

Quotes:

Honest, industrious, peaceful citizens were classed as bloodsuckers, if they asked to be paid a living wage. And they saw that praise was reserved henceforth for those who devised means of getting paid enormously for committing crimes against which no laws had been passed. Thus the American dream turned belly up, turned green, bobbed to the scummy surface of cupidity unlimited, filled with gas, went bang in the noonday sun.

I ask myself, ‘How dare a university teach compassion without teaching history, too? History tells us this, my dear young Mr. Buntline, if it tells us nothing else: Giving away a fortune is a futile and destructive thing. It makes whiners of the poor, without making them rich or even comfortable.’

I’d pray that Mr. Vonnegut’s humor would prevail in our meeting and he’d tolerate my admiration enough to allow for intelligent conversation around his writing process.

My rating for God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater is a 7 out of 10.
