Ontario Gaming - What's Hot and What's Not

Gambling has a long history in Ontario, dating back to horse racing and lottery games in the 19th century, with the government gradually regulating and expanding gaming opportunities. The real shift came in April 2022, when Ontario launched its regulated online gambling market, giving players legal access to real-money iCasino and sports betting. Since then, the province has seen steady growth in this area.
New players are constantly shaking up Ontario’s iGaming market, with top platforms like Swiper Ontario casino offering all the latest games, from modern slots to classic table games. With 48 licensed operators currently active in the province and more than 80 approved real-money sites live, Ontario’s online casino scene has never been more diverse or competitive.
January alone set a new provincial record with more than $9.5 billion wagered across licensed platforms, up 21.4% from the same month last year. Online casino gaming continues to dominate, with nearly 86% of all bets placed on iCasino, translating to more than $308 million in revenue for operators. The total gross gaming revenue from all regulated platforms hit $401.5 million, up 22% year over year, though slightly down from December’s record-breaking $425 million. The active player count also climbed to a record 1.32 million accounts, nearly 20% higher than January 2025.
While online casino revenue is booming, sports betting has taken a slight downturn from previous years. Ontario sports books generated $86.7 million in January, down 5.8% from last year, and accounting for just 22% of all regulated online gambling spending. Despite that, sports betting remains popular, with nearly $1.18 billion wagered on events across the month. Peer-to-peer poker games contributed a smaller portion, around $156 million, but continue to attract a loyal player base. Interestingly, online casino revenue tends to grow faster than player handle, a pattern that continued in January as operators raked in 33.7% more than in the same period last year.
Momentum from 2025 continues to surge into 2026, following a year in which Ontario operators saw $98 billion in wagers and more than $4 billion in revenue. The province collected over $800 million in taxes from iGaming in 2025 alone, with another $80 million added in January. The market has matured significantly in its first four years since opening in April 2022, with online casinos clearly leading the way. Operators are also eyeing other provinces, particularly Alberta, which is expected to launch commercial iGaming around June or July 2026.
For players in Ontario, the variety of licensed platforms means there’s no shortage of options. Sites like Swiper are making a strong impression, combining sleek interfaces with a wide selection of the latest games. Whether it’s spinning slots, testing strategies in table games, or catching live sports action, the regulated environment ensures players can enjoy their favorite gaming safely and legally. As more operators enter the market, competition will likely drive even better offerings, keeping Ontario at the forefront of online gambling in North America.
