How China Fakes its Success With Frank Dikotter (Video)

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

In this 5 September 2026 published Triggernometry video, hosts Konstantin Kisin and historian Francis Foster talk with historian Frank Dikotter about China’s history and economy.

Dikötter deconstructs the rise of the Chinese Communist Party by arguing that China’s perceived economic and historical success relies on fabricated narratives and systemic paranoia. His analysis presents the nation’s superpower status as an “Empire of Illusion” built on forced amnesia and state-managed propaganda.

China’s economic success is built on a real foundation of rapid industrialization and poverty reduction, but it has historically been propped up by manipulated local economic data and state-driven overcapacity. The Chinese Communist Party historically evaluated provincial officials based on strict growth targets. This created a principal-agent problem where local leaders inflated GDP numbers, double-counted investments, or funded unproductive infrastructure to meet quotas. Official skepticism was so high that former Premier Li Keqiang stated in 2007 that GDP figures were “man-made” and unreliable. He instead preferred tracking electricity consumption, rail cargo volume, and bank loans to gauge true economic activity. The international community largely accepted these inflated metrics because they coincided with a genuine, visible physical transformation—sprouting skylines, massive high-speed rail networks, and dominant global manufacturing ports.

Pressure to hit numerical targets led to heavy capital channeling into ghost cities and excess industrial inventory that boosted short-term GDP without sustainable economic utility. While international cross-checks by groups like the IMF make total fabrication difficult today, China faces severe macroeconomic imbalances, including a deflating real estate crisis, soaring local government debt, and transitions into advanced sectors like electric vehicles and AI.

China’s perceived economic standing in 2026 is highly polarized, defined by a stark contrast between a domestic slowdown and its robust influence as a global trade superpower. While Western nations view China’s slowing growth and manufacturing overcapacity with concern, developing economies increasingly see it as a dominant and reliable economic partner.

Domestically, the perception of China’s economic health is clouded by a deliberate but painful shift away from its old growth models. China’s economy grew by 4.7 percent in the first half of 2026, but slowed to 4.3 percent in the second quarter. This aligns with Beijing’s more pragmatic annual growth target of 4.5 percent to 5.0 percent. The ongoing real estate slump continues to erode household wealth, depressing domestic retail sales and consumer confidence. A domestic phenomenon known as neijuan (involution) has taken hold, where fierce domestic competition drives price wars—especially in electric vehicles (EVs) and solar energy—leading to plummeting corporate profits and stagnant wage growth. In response, Beijing is forcing capital into “new quality productive forces” like advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, and green technology to drive long-term productivity.

Another “expert” on China who knows nothing about China. Why do many Americans have such a pleasure in seeing China fail? In fact it seems that the only desire that these “patriots” have is that the whole world to be on its knees and paying ransom to America for “protection” from the “enemy” next door!
