Zimbabwean Immigrants in South Africa Face Harassment and Demands for Bribes

The lives of Zimbabwean immigrants in South Africa have become increasingly difficult since the new Minister of Home Affairs took office. Many are being arrested and fined for not having the required permits or asylum documents.

In the Johannesburg CBD, those arrested are being charged exorbitant fees ranging from R3000 to R5000. In Tembisa, the charges are slightly lower, at R1500, but can be reduced to R1000.

These operations have been ongoing since the new DA Minister of Home Affairs assumed power, marking a stark contrast to the more tolerant approach of the previous ANC administration.

The situation is dire, with Zimbabwean men, women, and children facing harassment and intimidation from the authorities. Many are being forced to pay bribes to avoid arrest, further exacerbating their already precarious financial situations.

It is imperative that the new Minister of Home Affairs adopts a more humanitarian approach, providing permits to Zimbabwean immigrants and ensuring their safety and well-being in South Africa.

The current state of affairs is unacceptable, and urgent action is needed to address the plight of these vulnerable individuals. We call on the Minister to take immediate steps to protect the rights and dignity of Zimbabwean immigrants in South Africa.

Recommendations:

1. Provide permits to Zimbabwean immigrants to regularize their status in South Africa.

2. End the harassment and intimidation of Zimbabwean immigrants by law enforcement agencies.

3. Ensure that all immigrants are treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their documentation status.

Together, we can create a more inclusive and compassionate society for all.

“Do not mistreat or oppress a foreigner, for you were foreigners in Egypt. Exodus 22:21

He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing.

Deuteronomy 10:18

I will continue to be a Voice of immigrants and the poor in South Africa and Zimbabwe.
