Those of us who have a relationship with Jesus Christ are looking forward to the time when we will be with Him; embraced in His loving arms. We have pictured this even in our minds over and over…watching this glorious event unfold.

But what if, at this moment, when we met Jesus Christ face to face, He said this to us:

Matthew 7:23 (KJV):

“And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”

Would you just be so crushed! How devastating this would be?!? My heart would just sink.

This scripture is part of Jesus’ teaching in the Sermon on the Mount, warning that not everyone who calls Him “Lord” or does works in His name will enter the kingdom of heaven. The key point is that personal relationship with Christ, not just outward actions or claims, determines salvation.

The very fact that there is a scripture stating that this could be the case should create full attention is this matter for us. What is the difference? What would make Christ say these things to a person, and most importantly, how can I ensure that this is not the conversation that you will hear during this wonderful day?

That’s a heavy but important question. Jesus’ words “I never knew you: depart from me” (Matthew 7:23, KJV) are some of the most sobering in all of Scripture. Let’s look carefully at who He is speaking to, what they have in common, and how we can avoid being among them.

Who are the people Jesus is speaking to?

In Matthew 7:21–23, Jesus describes them:

  • They call Him “Lord, Lord” (they profess Christ with their lips).
  • They prophesy, cast out devils, and do many wonderful works (religious activity, even miraculous signs).
  • Yet Jesus rejects them because He never truly knew them.

So, these are not atheists, pagans, or people openly against God. They are people who think they are Christians, who appear very religious, and even accomplish impressive things.

What do they have in common?

They trusted in works, not grace.
They pointed to what they did (“we prophesied… we cast out devils… we did many works”) instead of what Christ did.

They lacked true relationship with Jesus.
They knew about Him, but He says, “I never knew you.” Christianity is not about external deeds but abiding in Christ by faith.

They were outwardly religious but inwardly lawless.
Jesus says, “depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” Their hearts were unchanged—they had religion without repentance.

In short: The people Jesus rejects are those who trust in their own works, lack a true relationship with Him, and live in hidden disobedience. To avoid that, we must rest fully in Christ’s finished work, walk with Him daily, and let His Spirit transform us.

Do YOU know Jesus Christ? Is the Jesus Christ that you know, the same entity that is taught of in the New Testament? Let’s test this, shall we? Answer these few questions.

  1. How did Christ teach that we are saved…
  1. By Grace through Faith
  2. By our works
  3. Both

If YOU knew Jesus Christ, you would know that we are saved by GRACE through FAITH. Our works have NOTHING to do with our salvation…NOTHING!

Ephesians 2:8-9

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

Salvation is a gift from God. You don’t earn it by obeying laws, doing good deeds, or performing rituals. Faith in Jesus Christ is the channel through which grace is received. Works are excluded as the source of salvation so that no one can boast about “earning” it.

  1. How did Jesus say we are justified?

a. By obeying the law perfectly
b. By faith in Him
c. By giving offerings

Romans 3:28 KJV

“Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.”

Again, if you think this involves our works, or living a perfect life, you do not know Jesus Christ.

  1. Who alone can forgive sins?

a. Bishops, Stake Presidents, Priests or Pastors
b. God through Jesus Christ
c. Angels

Mark 2:7 KJV, Luke 5:20

Mark 2:7
“Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only?”

Luke 5:20
“And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.” He, being Jesus Christ.

There is no man that comes between us and Jesus Christ when it comes to being forgiven for our sins. It is to HIM that we confess our sins, not to a mortal man or church.

  1. What must a person do to have eternal life according to Jesus?

a. Keep all the commandments
b. Believe in the Son of God
c. Do good deeds

John 3:16 KJV

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Are you beginning to see a clouded understanding that you have had about Jesus Christ? Our works are not the key in understanding Jesus. His atonement was ENOUGH to fulfill all of these things. It is not left up to church leaders or even ourselves to receive the fullness of the atonement that He offers to us.

  1. Which statement best describes Jesus’ relationship to the Father?

a. He is a created prophet
b. He is the only begotten Son of God
c. He is a good teacher

John 1:14 (KJV):

“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”

  1. How are we made righteous in the eyes of God?

a. By our works
b. By faith in Jesus’ sacrifice
c. By fasting and praying

2 Corinthians 5:21 KJV

“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”

This verse is central to the doctrine of salvation by grace. It teaches that:

  1. Christ took our sin – Jesus, who was sinless, was made to bear our sins.
  2. Imputation of righteousness – Because of what Christ did, believers are credited with God’s righteousness.
  3. Exchange principle – There’s a divine exchange: our sin on Christ, His righteousness on us.

It’s a foundational verse showing that salvation is entirely a gift from God, not based on our works, and emphasizes Christ’s unique role in redemption.

  1. What does Jesus promise to those who come to Him?

a. Wealth and prosperity
b. Rest for their souls
c. Freedom from all trouble

Matthew 11:28-30 KJV

28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

This passage is one of Jesus’ most comforting invitations, offering spiritual rest and relief from the heavy burdens of life and sin.

  1. Can anyone be saved without believing in Jesus Christ?

a. Yes, by being a good person
b. No, only through Jesus
c. Sometimes, if God wills

John 14:6 KJV

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

This verse is one of the most explicit statements of Jesus about His unique role in salvation. It emphasizes:

  1. The Way – Jesus is the only path to the Father; there is no other route to eternal life.
  2. The Truth – He embodies ultimate truth, not just teaching it.
  3. The Life – He is the source of eternal life, giving spiritual life to those who believe in Him.

It’s a foundational verse for understanding salvation by grace through faith in Christ alone.

  1. What best describes your relationship with Jesus Christ?
    1. Directly with Him.
    2. With a church acting as the “Mediator”
    3. Sunday’s only

1 Timothy 2:5 (KJV)“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”

→ We don’t need a prophet, or church system to stand between us and God. Jesus alone is the Mediator.

I believe this one question will eliminate many religious people from being welcomed by Jesus Christ. There are so many people that I know personally that have a relationship with their church, rather than a relationship with Jesus Christ. They lean heavily upon the churches teachings that they must fulfill in order to come to Christ. Many of these things promote completing the atonement through our works, and not understanding that what Jesus did was ENOUGH, and completed the atonement.

Teaching things such as the “Blood Atonement” indicating that a person who were to have taken the life of another can only be forgiven by having his own life taken, are a perfect example of people who do not know Jesus Christ.

Here are some other false teachings that indicate that you do not know Jesus Christ.

Atonement + Works = Salvation

Church Teaching: The atonement provides resurrection for all, but eternal life (exaltation) requires obedience to LDS ordinances, temple rituals, and keeping commandments.

Bible Truth: Salvation is by grace through faith alone (Ephesians 2:8–9, Titus 3:5, Romans 3:28). Works follow salvation as fruit, but they do not secure it.

Atonement Began in Gethsemane, Not the Cross

Church Teaching: LDS leaders often say that Jesus “suffered for our sins in Gethsemane.”

Bible Truth: Scripture is clear that the cross is where Christ bore our sins (1 Peter 2:24, Colossians 2:14, John 19:30). The garden was anguish, but the atonement was made by His shed blood on the cross.

Exaltation to Godhood

Church Teaching: Through Christ’s atonement, humans can become gods, ruling worlds like the Father.

Bible Truth: The atonement restores fellowship with God, not divinity. Eternal life is to know God (John 17:3), not to become Him. The Bible clearly teaches there is only one God (Isaiah 43:10, Isaiah 44:6).

Temple Ordinances as Necessary for Atonement

Church Teaching: Full access to the benefits of Christ’s atonement requires temple endowments, sealing marriages, and proxy baptisms.

Bible Truth: The temple veil was torn (Matthew 27:51). Through Christ’s blood alone we have direct access to God (Hebrews 10:19–20). No earthly temple rituals are needed anymore.

Atonement Limited by LDS Membership

Church Teaching: To receive the “fullness” of salvation, one must belong to the LDS church.

Bible Truth: Christ saves all who believe, regardless of church membership or earthly affiliation (Romans 10:9–13, John 3:16).

Multiple Levels of Heaven

Church Teaching: Christ’s atonement places people in one of three “kingdoms” (celestial, terrestrial, telestial), based on their worthiness.

Bible Truth: The Bible teaches only two eternal destinies — eternal life with Christ or eternal separation in hell (Matthew 25:46, John 5:28–29).

How did you do with your answers to this test? I want to make a point here. Jesus taught that He would “push aside” people for not knowing Him, and was even speaking about people who were doing works in His name. The ultimate consequence is that they were excluded from His presence. There are MANY who think that they know Jesus Christ, yet THEY DO NOT!

When a false prophet, or false religion teaches things about Jesus Christ that are not true, and YOU believe those things, you are the person that Christ is referring to in this scripture. YOU DO NOT KNOW HIM, and He is speaking directly to you.

Can you see why it’s important to identify false teachings of Christ, and learn of the true Gospel of Jesus Christ as taught in the New Testament? You DON’T want to hear the Savior say that to you.

His gospel teaches that we are to accept Jesus Christ into our life and have faith in His atoning sacrifice. Repent of our sins and ask for forgiveness. Then demonstrate our faith in Him by trying not to sin. By doing this, we see a drastic change in our life. It’s as if we are “Born Again.” Having faith in His atonement means that we acknowledge that what He did Himself was enough, and nothing is needed on our part, nor the part of a church to fulfill this atonement.

Hebrews 10:10 KJV“By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”

    • Shows His sacrifice was complete and final.

John 19:30 KJV“It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.”

    • “It is finished” means the work of redemption and atonement was fully accomplished.

Romans 5:8-9 KJV“…God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood…”

    • Christ’s atonement is sufficient for our justification—our being made right with God.

Ephesians 2:8-9 KJV“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

    • Confirms grace through faith in His completed work, not any human effort, is enough.

So, the bottom line: Christ’s atonement is sufficient. Nothing else can add to it or make it stronger. Salvation is by grace through faith alone in His finished work.

If you believe that the atonement is only effective, after you do all that you can do, you do not understand or know Jesus Christ, and should be prepared to be rejected by Him as noted in the scripture.

So, what can you do if you failed this test? =) You can fix all of this by simply studying the Jesus as taught in the New Testament. Stop receiving your information from a false prophet, and turn to God for direction. He will guide you through those teachings, and more importantly, He will confirm the things that you are learning as being the TRUTH!

How can we make sure we do not hear those words? Here are a few suggestions:

Be saved by grace through faith.
Ephesians 2:8–9 (KJV): “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
We must cling to Christ alone, not to our own deeds.

Seek relationship, not performance.
Jesus said in John 10:27 (KJV): “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” Do we walk with Him daily in prayer, obedience, and dependence?

Bear the fruit of obedience flowing from faith.
True salvation produces transformation. 1 John 2:3 (KJV): “And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.”

Examine our hearts.
2 Corinthians 13:5 (KJV): “Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves.”

Learning the truth right now might have mortal consequences, as you begin to see that you have been deceived for many years. Yet these consequences are far less than the eternal consequences that you will receive if you do not know Christ.

I realize that this is a Big Deal to you, for I went through the same experience. It is difficult to unlearn false religious teachings, especially if we have had these believes all of our lives. Start your new journey with God in prayer, right now. Ask Him to show you the truth. Express your desire to want to understand Him in a way which qualifies you to be welcomed into His kingdom with open arms, and not rejected.

Break free of the controlling chains of deception which your church has you bound in. Recognize that they are leading you AWAY from Jesus Christ, and not closer to. If I might be so bold, it is because of your church and its teachings that Jesus will likely say to you, “I Never Knew You: Depart from Me!” That alone should create a desire to learn of Him as taught in the New Testament.

Sadly, it has been my experience that most members of the church have been so programed, that they will shun my warnings. I feel sad, but also understand the principle of free agency. Like Jesus when He sat outside the gates of Jerusalem, feeling the sorrow of rejection:

Matthew 23:37 (KJV):

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!”

Jesus’ lament over Jerusalem is both a sorrowful cry and a prophetic warning. He longed to gather His people under His protection, but they repeatedly rejected Him and the prophets sent before Him. This reveals God’s heart of mercy—always willing to save—but also the consequence of hardened hearts: judgment follows rejection.

In the last days, this applies to the world as a whole; many will continue to resist Christ’s call, choosing their own way instead of His refuge. Yet those who run to Him will find safety under His wings, even as judgment falls around them.

In closing, I’m reminded of an experience of a discussion with a current member of the church. He expressed His concern by asking, “Could my church deceive me in the last days?” He was asking this almost as he were in disbelief. My response was, “They already have, and have been greatly deceived for years.” Can’t you see how the church is taking you away from Jesus Christ, and not closer to?

I admonish you to heed His warning.

” It is difficult to unlearn false religious teachings, especially if we have had these believes all of our lives.” NOT REALLY very simple freedom
Religious orders and the spirit by which they rule people are based on man made systems of belief followed by another Jesus, another spirit and another god.
However we know that the call of God is to be made new in salvation by the power and presence of the Holy Spirit within. That amounts to having passed through the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus/Yeshua in order to separate from our former way of life. Not just once but every time we need a renewed mind and heart.
Paul says it like this: Romans 8:13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live. This is how we break contracts with religious bondage.
Ask Jesus/ Yeshua by the Holy Spirit to put to death your brand of religious ownership and devotion that has been holding you captive in physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual ways. You didn’t save yourself, neither do you have to deliver yourself.
