The Holy Spirit – What Do YOU Know About It? Why YOU Will Need This in These Last Days on Earth

Posted Sept 24, 2025 | End Times Watch | River Wilde

As time progresses in these end times, many people are curious about spiritual matters, as well as the Bible teachings. So, what is the Holy Spirit, or as some people refer to it as the Holy Ghost?

God has created a way for Him to communicate with us. He knew that when we were sent down to earth that we would not have any memory of Him nor anything that happened prior to our birth. Yes, we have learned that God has appeared to some men like the prophets in the Old Testament, but what about the “common man,” you and me?

This creation, the Holy Ghost, is that God’s solution in interacting with mankind. Let’s first learn about what this is:

In the King James Version (KJV), the Holy Ghost is described as the Spirit of God, the third Person of the Godhead, who works to teach, guide, comfort, and empower believers. Here are some of its characteristics:

  • He is the Comforter promised by Jesus (John 14:26), sent to teach and remind believers of Christ’s words.
  • He guides into all truth (John 16:13).
  • He dwells in believers as the Spirit of adoption (Romans 8:15–16).
  • He gives power to be witnesses of Christ (Acts 1:8).
  • He convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 16:8).

And the most powerful gift that he brings to us is…A TEACHER.

John 14:26 (KJV)

“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”

I can not tell you the number of times that I have been in a secluded place, without distractions, when a thought, or a series of thoughts, came, “teaching me” about the things that I have studied or prayed about. Thoughts are the best way for me to describe this interaction with God through the Holy Ghost. And how do I know that these are not just my own thoughts? Because I clearly am not as bright as the thoughts that come to me.

In short: the Holy Ghost in the KJV is God’s Spirit to comfort, guide, convict, teach and empower them to live in Christ.

So, how does a person receive this Holy Ghost? Let’s go there now.

1. Repentance and Faith in Jesus Christ

  • Acts 2:38“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”
The promise of the Holy Ghost follows repentance and faith in Christ.

2. Baptism into Christ

  • Baptism is often tied with the reception of the Holy Ghost in Acts. It is an outward testimony of faith and obedience.
  • Acts 19:5-6“When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.”

3. Laying on of Hands (sometimes, but not always)

In several passages, the Holy Ghost is given through the laying on of the apostles’ hands:

  • Acts 8:17“Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.”
But in other cases, like Cornelius’ household, the Spirit came directly:
  • Acts 10:44“While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.”

This shows God can give the Spirit sovereignly, either with or without human mediation.

4. Asking in Faith

Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would be given to those who ask:

  • Luke 11:13“If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?”

5. Obedience to God

  • Acts 5:32 – “And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.”

In summary, a person receives the Holy Ghost by believing in Jesus Christ, repenting, obeying God, being baptized, and asking in faith. Sometimes God sends the Spirit immediately (Acts 10), and sometimes He confirms it through the laying on of hands (Acts 8, 19).

Many people wonder: Was the Holy Spirit on earth before Jesus came? The answer is a resounding yes—but His role has changed in powerful ways since Christ’s death and resurrection. Let’s walk through what the Bible teaches about this, and who has access to the Spirit today.

1. The Spirit at Creation

The Holy Spirit has always been present. From the very first verses of Scripture, He is introduced:

  • Genesis 1:2“And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.”

Before there was light, life, or order, the Spirit of God was active in shaping creation.

2. The Spirit in the Old Testament

In the Old Testament, the Spirit worked differently than He does now. He came upon individuals for special tasks:

  • Judges 14:6 – The Spirit gave Samson supernatural strength.
  • 1 Samuel 16:13 – The Spirit came upon David when he was anointed as king.
  • Micah 3:8 – The Spirit filled the prophets with power to declare God’s truth.

The Spirit’s presence was real, but often temporary and selective. He empowered certain people, but He did not indwell every believer permanently.

3. A Promise of Something Greater

The prophets looked forward to a time when the Spirit would be poured out on all of God’s people, not just a few:

  • Joel 2:28“And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh…”

This prophecy was partially fulfilled at Pentecost (Acts 2), and it points to God’s plan to bring His Spirit to every believer in Christ.

4. The Spirit After Christ’s Ascension

Jesus taught His disciples that the Spirit’s relationship with believers was about to change:

  • John 14:17“…for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”

At Pentecost, this promise was fulfilled:

  • Acts 2:4“And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost…”

From that day forward, every true follower of Christ has the Holy Spirit dwelling inside them, not just resting upon them. This is the new covenant reality.

5. Who Has Access to the Holy Spirit Today?

The Bible is clear: the Holy Spirit is given to everyone who belongs to Christ.

  • Romans 8:9“…Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.”
  • Ephesians 1:13“…after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise.”

This means:

  • If you have placed your faith in Jesus Christ for salvation, the Spirit already dwells in you.
  • If you have not yet trusted Christ, the Spirit is still at work—convicting, drawing, and inviting you to come to the Savior.

This is one of the greatest gifts God has given His people: His very presence, guiding, comforting, and strengthening us until Christ returns.

Will the Holy Spirit be taken from the earth? Let’s look at what the KJV Bible teaches about the Holy Spirit in the end times, and whether He will leave the earth.

The Holy Spirit Will Still Be Working in the Last Days

  • Joel 2:28–29 (quoted in Acts 2:17–18) –
“And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh…”

This shows that even in the last days, God’s Spirit will be active—giving dreams, visions, and prophecy.

The Holy Spirit Restrains Evil Until the Appointed Time

  • 2 Thessalonians 2:7
“For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.”

Many Bible students understand “he who now letteth [restrains]” to refer to the Holy Spirit, working through the church to restrain lawlessness. When He is “taken out of the way,” the Antichrist will be revealed openly.

This doesn’t mean the Holy Spirit is completely gone—it means His restraining role is lifted, allowing evil to come to full power.

The Spirit Still Brings People to Christ During the Tribulation

Even after the restrainer is “taken out of the way,” the Spirit will still be present:

  • Countless people will be saved during the Tribulation (Revelation 7:9–14). This cannot happen without the Spirit drawing them (John 6:44).
  • The Spirit will empower the two witnesses in Jerusalem (Revelation 11:3–6).
  • He will still comfort, convict, and seal those who believe.

Will the Spirit Leave the Earth?

No, not entirely.

God’s Spirit is eternal (Hebrews 9:14) and cannot be absent from His creation (Psalm 139:7–8).

What changes is His role: before the Tribulation, He restrains evil powerfully through the church; after that restraint is lifted, evil will surge. But He still works in the hearts of those who repent and believe in Christ during the Tribulation.

In the last days, the Holy Spirit will still be poured out, guiding, convicting, and saving. However, His restraining influence on lawlessness will be lifted (2 Thess. 2:7), allowing the Antichrist to rise. He will never completely leave the earth—without Him, no one could be saved, even in the Tribulation.

So, now you know what the Holy Spirit is, and how you can receive it. It is, and should be, part of your plan to endure the last days upon the earth. It is key that you have this tool to defend you from the DECEPTIION that is soon to come from the antichrist.

If you do not have this gift, “give your life” to Jesus Christ, and become “Born Again” as it states in the New Testament. You then will receive this wonderful gift. As you continue to live your best life, this gift will become stronger and clearer, for this is how God communicates with His children who have chosen to stay close to Him.

“Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.” – John 14:17
