Bullying Employers Won't Build Jobs — It Will Destroy Them

Across parts of Gauteng and beyond, a troubling pattern has taken hold: groups confronting business owners in the street, demanding they fire foreign staff, and threatening those who refuse. Through Makumbirofa Farms’ advocacy network, we have gathered documented firsthand accounts of employers — South African and foreign-owned alike — describing visits from self-styled “enforcement” groups, some dressed in traditional regalia, wielding sticks and issuing ultimatums outside their own premises.

These are not protests in the ordinary sense. A protest asks a government to change a policy. What is happening here is different: private individuals are attempting to dictate, by threat of force, who a business owner is allowed to employ. That is not activism. It is intimidation, and it carries real legal and economic consequences.

Employers hire based on skill, reliability, and fit for the role — not by dictate from a crowd outside the door. When that basic right is threatened, the predictable response isn’t compliance. It’s withdrawal. Business owners scale back, relocate, or close entirely rather than operate under threat. Every one of those outcomes destroys jobs — including the jobs of the very South Africans these campaigns claim to be fighting for.

This is the part that gets lost in the noise: capital is mobile, and confidence is fragile. Investors and entrepreneurs who see mob tactics succeeding against one business owner will simply take their money elsewhere. No country has ever grown its economy, or its employment rate, by making it more dangerous to run a company inside its borders.

It is worth saying plainly what is often left unsaid: not everyone stays quiet about this. Across social media in recent weeks, ordinary South Africans — across every background — have been pushing back publicly against these mob tactics, calling them out as lawless, self-defeating, and harmful to the very communities they claim to serve. That pushback deserves to be heard as loudly as the mobs themselves.

Justice for South Africans who genuinely lack jobs will not come from sticks outside a shop door. It will come from policy, investment, skills training, and an economy stable enough to attract the employers who create work in the first place. Every rand spent organising intimidation campaigns is a rand not spent building the businesses, cooperatives, and training programmes that could actually put people to work.

Foreign nationals working legally and honestly in South Africa are not the cause of unemployment. Chasing away the employers — foreign and local — who are willing to invest and hire is what will guarantee it stays high. If the energy behind these mobs went instead into building enterprises, mentoring young jobseekers, or pressuring government for the reforms that actually unlock growth, South Africa would be better for it. Hatred and looting have never once produced a single sustainable job.
