The US Consumer Is Just Broke (Here's the Proof) - Video

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

In this 1 November 2026 published video, host Jeff Snider talks with Steve Van Metre about the economy and the broke consumer.

Intel just suffered its worst trading day in more than half a century, wiping out nearly $140 billion in market value. And here’s the strange part: its data-center business grew almost 80 percent in a year. Not AI, the trouble is consumers.

It’s becoming impossible to ignore. McDonald’s is preparing another value deal. Wendy’s is confronting a different crisis as one of its largest franchisees filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Then there’s Walmart.

Despite persistent overall consumer spending and GDP growth, U.S. consumers face a major disconnect between macro-level economic data and their personal financial reality.

The macroeconomic data paints a picture of a resilient economy, with third-quarter GDP growth accelerating to a 3.4 percent annual rate driven by robust corporate investment and steady retail numbers. However, beneath this surface lies a starkly bifurcated reality: the average U.S. consumer is increasingly depleted, drawing down on safety nets just to cover basic daily living expenses.

While the “wealth effect” keeps high-income asset holders spending aggressively, the majority of households face a zero-sum budget game where persistent inflation and lagging wages have completely eroded disposable income.

Household spending and retail sales continue to climb, backed by a relatively stable labor market, higher asset values (home and stock prices), and increased purchase volumes. Consumer confidence and sentiment have dropped sharply, hovering near multi-year or historic lows as persistent inflation on everyday essentials like groceries, gas, and housing drains household budgets. The U.S. personal saving rate has compressed (falling to around 4.1 percent), while consumer debt reaches record highs, driven in part by heavy reliance on credit cards and monthly financing/buy-now-pay-later services. Higher-income households with investment and real estate portfolios continue to spend comfortably, masking a large segment of paycheck-to-paycheck households experiencing a severe cost-of-living squeeze.
