Hazardous chemical detected in Oklahoma air, first known case in North America

According to a report from News 9, scientists have detected a potentially hazardous chemical compound in the air over north-central Oklahoma—the first documented instance of medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs) in the Western Hemisphere.

University of Colorado Boulder researchers made the unexpected discovery during atmospheric fieldwork in an agricultural region of the state. While current measured levels do not pose an immediate health threat, the finding raises important questions about persistent pollutants and their pathways into the environment.

MCCPs, man-made compounds linked to industrial processes, had previously been identified in places like Antarctica and Asia but never before in North American air.

The compounds are used in metalworking fluids, PVC production, and textiles, and they can accumulate in wastewater. Researchers suspect biosolid fertilizer—treated sewage sludge applied to fields—as a likely source. When spread across farmland, these materials may release the chemicals into the atmosphere.

“When sewage sludges are spread across the fields, those toxic compounds could be released into the air,” said Daniel Katz, CU Boulder chemistry PhD student and lead author of the study. “We can’t show directly that that’s happening, but we think it’s a reasonable way that they could be winding up in the air.”

Dr. Eleanor Browne of the University of Colorado added perspective on the broader significance: “These sorts of studies are important, even if there’s not an immediate health outcome. We need to understand the baseline and to understand overall what’s going on.”

MCCPs share traits with “forever chemicals” like PFAS, persisting in the environment and prompting regulatory scrutiny under the Stockholm Convention.

Oklahoma lawmakers have already restricted certain uses of biosolid fertilizer due to similar contamination concerns. The health impacts of long-term MCCP exposure remain unclear, and scientists plan further measurements across seasons and locations to track the compound’s prevalence and origins.
