Our children are set to wake up with a shock even if we don’t. The European Environment Agency reports that “Across the world, ecosystems are today exposed to critical levels of pollution in increasingly complex mixtures…..There is clear evidence of the detrimental effects of pollution on the natural environment…….The number of marine dead zones has increased markedly……between 3% to 12% of annual crop production is lost due to pollution.” See reference below.

Although recent efforts to decrease rates of pollution in Europe and North America are succeeding, there is still a concern over global trends due to increasing rates of pollution in Asia and Africa. In fact the main reason pollution is decreasing in the West is that factories in the West have closed down and the over-populated countries in the East have taken over the manufacturing industries; so there has been no overall benefit. Everyone will suffer the consequences.

The World Health Organization estimates that 7 million premature deaths occur every year due to the effects of pollution. This rate is expected to rise in future and life expectancy will start decreasing. Also food production will reach a peak and then start diminishing. These trends will reduce the world’s population and thus the rate of pollution. So the long term prognosis for our grandchildren (those who survive) may not be too bad. But what about our children? Time to wake them all up before they wake up with a shock!
