The site — now co-owned by Portland Public Schools and Portland Parks & Rec — had previously been part of Portland State University’s Urban Farm Apprenticeship Program.
“This had been the training ground for a lot of people here in Portland who are urban farmers,” said Hoover, who earned a Bachelor of Arts in sociology from UC Santa Cruz and grew up bi-coastal between Philadelphia and Palo Alto, California.
Black Futures Farm is part of the Black Food Sovereignty Coalition, a hub empowering Black and brown communities to participate as owners and movement leaders within food systems.
Collards, cauliflower, chard, kale, beets, garlic, onions, scallions, carrots, herbs, potatoes, corn, tomatoes, peppers, squash and other rotating vegetable crops, as well as 25 mature fruit trees, provide food for a variety of social service programs and events. Some of the produce is sold to small restaurants and through Portland’s thriving food truck community. A small CSA is currently on hiatus.
