Teh Geok Siew’s urban farming journey

Geow Siew grows plants in the third-floor balcony of her condominium in Upper Serangoon, together with tropical fruits such as starfruit and longan. From one successful cutting, she harvests ping pong-sized green and red apples once a year. From another citrus cutting, she picks tangelo, a pomelo-like fruit.

There are herbs such as basil and mint growing in 15 recycled soft drink bottles that he has secured to the railing outside his flat. There are also herbs sprouting from about 150 small transparent plastic cups at the railing outside his in-laws’ place two doors away. There, he also grows oyster mushrooms in 12 soft drink bottles as well as vegetables such as bak choy and kangkong in a styrofoam box.

They started growing a few plants such as mint, tomatoes and rosemary in small pots and planters in the balcony of their three-bedroom condominium in the western part of Singapore. The passion eventually turned into a sucessful business idea where Thorben now sells aeroponic systems, which he designed.
