Abstract:
Urban farming is becoming increasingly known for how it helps with food security and making cities more resilient to climate change. This study adds to the expanding body of research on urban farming by looking at the economic aspects of it in three floodplain communities along the Yamuna River in Delhi: Madanpur Khadar, Chilla Khadar, and Vishwakarma Colony. The study uses descriptive statistics and regression analysis to look at differences in input consumption, output returns, and Gross Farm Income (GFI) factors. The data comes from 150 farming households between March and June 2023.
The results show that there are big differences in the number of landholdings and availability of resources between locations, with Chilla Khadar having the most farming households covered during the field survey (51.3%) and having the greatest input costs, especially for labour and manure. Vishwakarma Colony, on the other hand, had the lowest overall farm returns because of insecure land tenure and inadequate infrastructure. Regression analysis demonstrates that the rental value per bigha (? = 0.124; p = 0.003) and the marketing cost per bigha (? = 28.94; p = 0.001) have statistically significant positive effects on GFI. This shows how important location and market engagement are for making money. Other factors, like the overall cost of inputs and the area of the land, were positively linked but not statistically significant. The main point of the study is to show that urban farming in ecologically sensitive areas may be economically viable and that the conditions there can change. Policy discussions often overlook this aspect. To make urban agriculture in informal settlements more productive and sustainable, it requires interventions that are tailored to different areas, better land tenure systems, and assistance for infrastructure.
