Allotments,, or Koloniträdgårdars,, were established at the turn of the 20th century as a way to support people’s mental and physical health s. Rapid urbanization in the 19th and 20th centuries drove people to cities in search of jobs. This influx of people into urban areas led to poor sanitation, insufficient living space, and the creation of the working class, all of which paved the way for ideas about urban social change. The Garden City philosophy was one such plan for social change, which proposed a concept similar to allotments and attempted to capture the benefits of urban and rural life while mitigating the challenges of both.
Allotments are land owned by the cities they reside in, with the first allotment was created in Malmö in 1895. Each city owns the land there allotments In 1921, the National Allotment Association was founded in Stockholm to coordinate the local allotment associations throughout Sweden. The National Allotment Association oversees the land and lease agreements between city municipalities and residents, though the cities themselves own the land their allotments reside on.
