Colorado Department of Agriculture accepting applications for urban farming microgrants

The Colorado Department of Agriculture has officially opened its Urban Agriculture Program’s first public funding opportunity: The Urban Agriculture Microgrant Program. The program, accepting grant applications as of Dec. 23, is looking to help complete small-scale projects that are “crucial to expanding urban production, implementing conservation practices, educating community members, and addressing other common challenges.”
According to the Department of Agriculture, urban agriculture is classified as the cultivation of farm products in or near urban, peri-urban, or rural areas with the specific intent to serve their local community.
“Urban producers play a critical role in resilient local food systems across Colorado,” said Evanne Caviness, Director of CDA’s Conservation Services Division. “Farming in an urban interface poses unique challenges to urban producers, and here at CDA, we recognize the importance of investing in their innovation and resilience.”
Applications are due by Jan. 26, 2026, and any farmer whose primary market is either community members or local businesses is encouraged to apply. A farm or operation does not need to be in or close to a major metropolitan area to be considered for grant approval.
The Urban Agriculture Microgrant Program has a total of $20,000 available to help urban farms through “actionable improvements, capacity building, and community engagement.” Grant awards will not exceed $5,000 per single applicant.
