Places That Matter Plaque Presentation – March 20, 2026, from 1 pm – 2 pm – The First Day of Spring!
Join Vancouver Heritage Foundation on the first day of spring to recognize City Farmer’s 48 year history as Vancouver’s first demonstration garden, ‘compost hotline’ and outdoor classroom to locals and international visitors. Remarks and plaque presentation will be followed by garden tours. This event is free. All are welcome.

Founded in 1978, City Farmer Society established the Strathcona Community Gardens and the Lord Roberts School Garden to demonstrate urban agriculture across diverse Vancouver environments. City Farmer transformed a former parking lot at this location, 2150 Maple Street, into an organic food garden in 1981. In 1990 it became the City of Vancouver’s Compost Demonstration Garden.
City Farmer now receives thousands of visitors from around the world eager to see how urban land can be managed in a productive and environmentally sustainable manner. As a living classroom, it features a variety of compost systems, a cob shed with a green roof, and cultivated beds of vegetables, herbs, fruit, and pollinator-friendly perennials. In warmer months, visitors may observe local wildlife, feed mulberry leaves to silkworms, and harvest hops used in beer making.
