Researchers warn of a silent chemical exposure affecting 100% of people tested

plastic-chemicals(NaturalHealth365)  Most people assume that what they cannot see cannot hurt them.  Plastic packaging looks inert, a food container appears harmless, and a shampoo bottle sitting on a shower shelf seems like a non-issue.  But a landmark human trial published in April 2026 in the prestigious journal Nature Medicine has delivered a finding that makes that assumption very difficult to hold onto.

Researchers at the University of Western Australia recruited adults from the general population and tested every single one for plastic-associated chemicals in their urine.  Every participant – 100% of those testedcarried measurable levels of at least six different plastic chemicals in their body.

And the research team had something else to show them: just seven days of targeted changes reduced those chemical levels dramatically.

The numbers that stopped researchers cold

The Plastic Exposure Reduction Transforms Health Trial measured exposure to phthalates and bisphenols – two families of chemicals widely used in plastic production that research consistently links to hormonal disruption, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic dysfunction.  The study combined an observational cohort of 211 Australian adults with a seven-day randomized controlled trial in 60 participants.

In the trial, intervention participants received plastic-free kitchenware, low-plastic personal care products, and food sourced specifically to minimize plastic contact from production through to the plate.  The control group made no changes.

After just seven days, the results were stark.  Phthalate levels in the intervention group dropped by more than 44%.  Bisphenol levels fell by more than 50%.  Both reductions occurred within a single week – without drugs, without medical procedures, and without anything more complicated than changing what people ate from and what they put on their skin.

What is leaching into your meal before it even reaches your plate

Phthalates and bisphenols are not rare industrial compounds.  They are among the most widespread synthetic chemicals in modern life.  Phthalates make plastic flexible and are found in food packaging, plastic wrap, vinyl flooring, cosmetics, and personal care products.  Bisphenol A (BPA) lines the inside of food cans and is used in plastic food containers, water bottles, and thermal paper receipts.  Manufacturers have quietly replaced BPA in many products with bisphenol S and bisphenol F, but research shows these replacements carry similar risks of hormonal disruption.

Both chemical families are endocrine disruptors – meaning they interfere with the hormonal signaling systems that govern metabolism, reproduction, thyroid function, immune response, and cardiovascular health.  Research published across multiple large human cohorts has linked higher phthalate and bisphenol exposure to increased rates of type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart disease, thyroid dysfunction, fertility problems, and developmental issues in children.

The PERTH Trial confirmed that highly processed, plastic-packaged, and canned foods are the most important modifiable sources of daily exposure – not the plastic bottle on your desk, but the food that spent months inside sealed plastic packaging before it reached your plate.

The risk factor your doctor has never screened you for

Phthalates and bisphenols have been under scientific scrutiny for decades.  The European Union has banned several phthalates from food-contact materials and children’s products.  Yet in the United States, most of these chemicals remain legal in food packaging, personal care products, and consumer goods.

Western medicine rarely screens patients for plastic chemical exposure.  No routine blood test measures bisphenol levels, and no standard health assessment asks about consumption of plastic-packaged food as a cardiovascular or hormonal risk factor.

Yet the PERTH Trial’s finding – that 100% of participants carried these chemicals and that simple behavioral changes reduced them by half in a week – suggests this is one of the most actionable environmental health risks most people are never told about.

Furthermore, the researchers noted that cardiometabolic biomarkers were negatively associated with higher phthalate exposure in the observational cohort – meaning people with the heaviest plastic chemical burden also showed worse markers for heart disease and metabolic dysfunction.  Consequently, reducing plastic exposure is not just an environmental concern but also a direct intervention for cardiovascular and metabolic health.

Natural solutions for reducing plastic exposure and protecting your health

Shift away from plastic-packaged and canned foods as a first priority.  The PERTH Trial identified processed, plastic-packaged, and canned foods as the most important modifiable source of daily phthalate and bisphenol exposure.  Choosing fresh, whole foods stored in glass, ceramic, or stainless steel – rather than plastic or lined cans – reduces the single largest daily source of these chemicals.

Avoiding heating food in plastic containers or covering food with plastic wrap during microwaving eliminates a significant additional source, as heat dramatically accelerates the leaching of plastic chemicals into food.

Switch to personal care products with low plastic and fragrance-free formulations.  Phthalates are widely used as fragrance carriers and fixatives in shampoos, conditioners, lotions, and cosmetics.  Research suggests that switching to fragrance-free personal care products, or those certified free of phthalates and parabens, meaningfully reduces daily dermal and inhalation exposure.

Look for products certified by the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep database, which rates cosmetic ingredients for safety.  Additionally, choosing glass or metal reusable containers for water and hot beverages eliminates a consistent daily source of bisphenol exposure.

Support the liver and detoxification pathways that process these chemicals.  The liver is the primary organ responsible for metabolizing and clearing phthalates and bisphenols from the body.  Research suggests that organic cruciferous vegetables – broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and cabbage – directly activate the liver’s phase II detoxification enzymes that break down endocrine-disrupting chemicals.

N-acetylcysteine supports glutathione production, the body’s master antioxidant and primary cellular defense against chemical damage.  Adequate hydration, consistent physical activity, and reduced consumption of ultra-processed foods all support the body’s elimination pathways to clear these compounds.

What nobody tells you at your annual checkup

Every single participant tested carried plastic chemicals in their body.  Not a majority, not those with unusual exposure – everyone.  And within one week of making targeted changes to food packaging and personal care products, those chemical levels dropped by more than half.

Jonathan Landsman’s Whole Body Detox Summit addresses exactly what the PERTH Trial makes urgent.  The program explores how environmental chemical exposure accumulates in the body, how it drives inflammation and metabolic disease, and what evidence-based natural strategies support the detoxification pathways that protect long-term health.

If reducing your toxic burden is a priority, exploring this lifesaving program may be the best decision you can make.
