Scientists identify a hidden gut microbe that separates healthy people from sick ones

CAG-170 was consistently found at higher levels in healthy people than in those with chronic illness. Moreover, the pattern held up across 13 different diseases and people living on six continents. No other bacterial group showed the same strength of association with good health across such a diverse global population.
What happens when this microbe goes missing
The diseases associated with low CAG-170 levels read like a list of the most common and debilitating conditions in modern life. Inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, anxiety, and depression all showed lower levels of CAG-170 in affected individuals compared to healthy controls.
Researchers found that as gut balance deteriorated over time, CAG-170 levels fell consistently.
