People Burdened By Power Reforms, Left Parties Oppose Smart Meters

Amalapuram – Andhra Pradesh: Amalapuram witnessed a strong call against electricity reforms on Thursday, as Left party leaders pledged to resist smart meter installations, citing unbearable burdens on common people.

Remembering martyrs

At the Amalapuram Clock Tower Center, CPM District Convener Kaarem Venkateswara Rao and CPI District Secretary Deva Rajendra Prasad recalled the historic electricity struggle of August 28, 2000, in Basheerbagh, Hyderabad. They said the firing during the agitation under the then TDP government claimed three lives and injured thousands, but the sacrifice brought temporary relief in electricity charges.

Burden on households

The leaders criticized successive governments — from the YSR Congress to the present TDP-led coalition — for implementing central electricity reforms without fail. They argued that rising charges under “True-up Charges” and “Customer Charges” are already a huge burden on every household, warning that smart meters would push families into further hardship.

Allegations of corporate favoritism

They alleged that the reforms, particularly smart meters, are designed to benefit corporate powers like Adani, forcing people to indirectly bear crores in costs. “This is cheating the people of Andhra Pradesh,” Venkateswara Rao said, calling the move an act of betrayal.

Call for resistance

The leaders vowed to continue the struggle until the reforms are rolled back, urging people to resist the installation of smart meters in their homes.

The program saw the participation of several CPM and CPI activists, including G Durga Prasad, Bunga Satyanarayana, Pamu Balayya, Munganda Durga Babu, Chelli Boyna Tatarao, and many others.
