BMW sees gains in Europe’s EV sector in July, but Tesla Model Y is still king

German luxury car maker BMW made huge gains in Europe’s electric vehicle sector in July. This was despite the Tesla Model Y continuing to be a dominating force in the segment. 

In a press release, Jato Dynamics noted that BMW’s EV sales saw a 35% year-on-year increase, which stands in stark contrast to a 16% year-over-year decline for Tesla. Dataforce, for its part, estimated that BMW’s EV sales rose 34% year-over-year in July, while Tesla saw a 16% year-over-year drop. It should be noted that Jato’s data was focused on the Europe-28 region, while Dataforce’s data covered EU countries, the UK, and the European Free Trade Association markets of Norway, Switzerland, and Iceland.

Interestingly enough, Jato Dynamics’ numbers suggest that BMW actually dethroned Tesla as the top EV maker in July, with sales of 14,869 vehicles versus Tesla’s 14,561 units. Dataforce, on the other hand, noted that BMW finished July 2024 with 14,687 sales, just 629 units behind Tesla, which was estimated to have seen 15,216 vehicle sales last month, as noted in an Automotive News Europe report. 

While Jato Dynamics and Dataforce’s estimates have slight differences, they do show similar trends. For one, BMW’s electric vehicles, which were led by the BMW i4 and the BMW iX1, saw a lot of growth in July 2024. The Tesla Model Y also maintained its place as a notable force in the region’s electric vehicle sector.

Jato Dynamics noted that the Tesla Model Y saw 9,544 vehicle sales in July, while the Tesla Model 3 saw 4,694 units sold in the EU-28 region. Despite this, electric vehicles still saw their market share decrease from 14.6% in July 2023 to 13.5% last month. Jato noted that based on its data, 139,300 new electric vehicles were registered last month, down 6% from July 2023. 

Felipe Munoz, Global Analyst at Jato Dynamics, shared a comment about the matter. “The lack of clarity around the incentives for – and future of – EVs continues to present a barrier to consumers considering an EV. These factors, alongside the low residual value of EVs contributed to the decline seen in July,” he noted.
