General Motors (GM) must exercise flexibility with EV investments: exec
General Motors (GM) is still confident in its investments for its electric vehicle program, but the automaker would have to exercise some flexibility to meet changing consumer demand. This was, at least, according to outgoing GM executive vice president of Global Manufacturing and Sustainability Gerald Johnson.
In a comment to Automotive News, Johnson noted that GM must be agile enough so that it could hit the market with the right vehicles at the right time. Thus, even if the veteran automaker has laid plans for its EV strategy last year, GM must be able to make adjustments as necessary, the executive noted. This does not mean that GM is double-thinking its EV efforts, however, as Johnson noted that the automaker is still confident with its electric vehicle investments.
“We’re still confident in those investments, but we do have to be agile enough to time and/or retime some of our startup dates so that we are hitting the market with the right product at the right time frame. The plans that we laid out a year ago, we have to be able to look at the market today and make adjustments and act accordingly. I think that’s smart business,” Johnson said.
Johnson noted that some of GM’s EV strategies today, such as the delayed production of the Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV pickups at the Orion Assembly plant in Michigan by six months, highlights this flexibility. GM has also noted that it will be adding battery cell capacity at its Ultium Cells LLC joint venture with LG Energy Solution with a “measured cadence.”
Despite these delays, GM is still launching more electric vehicle models this year. These include the Sierra EV, the Cadillac Optic, and the Chevrolet Equinox EV. “We can control capital spend. We can control execution and timing. We can’t control demand. That, we have to respond and react to. The market will tell us the right time and, quite frankly, the right product and the right product mixes. We’ve allowed ourselves enough flexibility, though, with our ICE and EV portfolio and interplaying our plants so that they’re flexible to move with the market demand,” Johnson noted.
